Chinese fashion designer Susan Fang is set to unveil her fall 2025 collection in Milan, blending her heritage, family history, and modern techniques in a showcase that questions the pursuit of happiness.
Susan Fang, a Chinese fashion designer, is set to present her fall 2025 collection in Milan on Sunday, marking a significant return for her brand. This collection is a personal narrative that explores her family history, Chinese culture, Italian craftsmanship, and the integration of technology into fashion. Speaking over Teams, Fang expressed that the collection prompts the question, “how do we pursue happiness?”
Her showcase in Milan is part of Dolce & Gabbana’s initiative to promote emerging designers, a program that has previously supported talents such as Feben and Karoline Vitto. Fang, who graduated from Central Saint Martins and was shortlisted for the 2019 LVMH Prize, is staging her first solo show in Milan following participation in a group showcase sponsored by Italy’s fashion chamber. The Italian luxury brand has not only supported her garment development but will also manage the entire event organization.
In a conversation with WWD, Fang highlighted the educational aspect of working with Dolce & Gabbana, especially regarding production scales and the insights gained from collaborating closely with their design team. She aims to utilize the resources provided by the fashion house, including access to its archives, to introduce innovative designs alongside her aesthetic vision.
Fang has titled her upcoming collection “Air memory,” inspired by her mother’s vibrant artwork and her background as a farmer. “I realized her biggest happiness already happened in her childhood. And I feel like I’m constantly pursuing my dream and happiness but sometimes happiness is already with us,” she noted. Her mother has played a crucial role in developing unique textile techniques for Fang’s brand since its establishment in 2017. The collection will feature elements of her mother’s artwork, transforming her art into fabric prints and hand-painted designs integrated into select garments.
The collection showcases a melding of traditional Chinese motifs and modern design, with floral and farming themes from her mother’s artwork translated into intricate embroideries and sequined designs, marking the first time Fang has ventured into tailoring. Denim pieces adorned with whimsical embellishments add a touch of innocence to the collection, which also includes lingerie that reflects a delicate reinterpretation of Dolce & Gabbana’s signature styles.
In addition to clothing, Fang has collaborated with Dolce & Gabbana to create a new line of accessories, including a bag inspired by the iconic Miss Sicily and a variety of shoes, each designed with unique details symbolic of Chinese culture. Fang remarked, “We constantly look at what we can explore next, how to push ourselves or what is the craft we can improve or try.”
Originally scheduled for last September, the show was postponed due to logistical challenges. Fang indicated that the additional time has allowed for the creation of more statement pieces, including dresses crafted from colorful organza. She expressed her desire to create designs that spread positivity, saying that her experiences with diverse cultures have inspired her to embrace love and kindness through fashion.
The upcoming show is poised to be a significant milestone for Fang, not just in her career but also as a platform highlighting the intersection of her heritage and contemporary design, promising a collection that is both personal and innovative.
