Comedian Adam Sandler’s unexpected casual outfit at the Oscars sparks humor and commentary, showcasing a unique contrast to traditional black-tie attire.

During the 95th Academy Awards ceremony held on March 12, 2023, at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, prominent figures from the film industry gathered to showcase their best sartorial choices. Among the elegantly dressed attendees, comedian and actor Adam Sandler opted for a notably casual outfit that drew attention and commentary from the event’s host, Conan O’Brien.

Sandler’s look featured a neon blue logo hoodie from the Los Angeles-based brand Aviator Nation, paired with a Hawaiian shirt and black and blue basketball shorts. This relaxed attire stood in stark contrast to the formal black-tie attire commonly expected at such prestigious events. Host Conan O’Brien humorously called attention to Sandler’s choice, likening it to that of “a guy playing video poker at 2 a.m.” during his opening remarks.

In response to O’Brien’s jibe, Sandler shot back from his seat, asserting, “Nobody even thought about what I was wearing until you brought it up. You know what, Conan? I like the way I look because I am a good person. I don’t care about what I wear or what I don’t wear. My snazzy gym shorts and fluffy sweatshirt offended you so much that you had to mock me in front of my peers.”

Following his exchange with O’Brien, Sandler announced his intention to leave the ceremony but not before loudly shouting “Chalamet!” to the ear of actor Timothée Chalamet, who was in attendance. Sandler suggested to the star-studded audience that they could partake in a game of five-on-five basketball after the Oscars concluded.

The Hollywood Reporter sought insights from Aviator Nation regarding Sandler’s appearance in their clothing during such a high-profile event. According to a spokesperson for the brand, Sandler’s fashion choice came as a surprise. “Adam is such a brand loyalist and we love sending him product but we didn’t gift him specifically for the Oscars,” the spokesperson stated, expressing excitement about Sandler’s spontaneous showcase of the brand.

Founded in 2006 by Paige Mycoskie, sister of TOMS founder Blake Mycoskie, Aviator Nation is recognized for its vibrant, soft casual wear, including sweaters and sweatpants. The brand has garnered a celebrity following, with several stars, including Lady Gaga, Robert Downey Jr., Jennifer Aniston, and Zac Efron, donning their designs. Aviator Nation promptly capitalized on the moment by updating their website’s homepage to feature a banner celebrating their “fluffy sweaters,” underscoring their enthusiasm for having a celebrity like Sandler represent their brand during the Academy Awards.

While Sandler’s hoodie style is nearly sold out, Aviator Nation continues to offer alternatives in their collection, enabling fans to find similar casual yet trendy options.
