Montreal-based brand Black Suede Studio opens its first physical showroom in Shanghai, marking a significant milestone in its global expansion strategy.

Black Suede Studio, a Montreal-based footwear and accessories brand, is solidifying its presence in Asia with the recent opening of a new showroom in Shanghai, China. This new facility marks the company’s first standalone physical location, which represents a significant milestone in its plan to enhance its global retail footprint.

The showroom will showcase Black Suede Studio’s seasonal footwear inventory, allowing buyers to schedule appointments to engage with the brand’s sales team directly. The company’s decision to establish a physical presence in Shanghai follows over five years of predominantly online sales, alongside partnerships with strategic retailers. Since its inception in 2019, Black Suede Studio has seen substantial growth in its international customer base, with its products now available in more than 70 retailers worldwide. Notable partners include Neiman Marcus, Ounass, Revolve, Nordstrom, Shopbop, Saks Fifth Avenue, Kith, Harvey Nichols, Galerie Lafayette, and Bloomingdale’s.

Kris Avakian, founder and owner of Black Suede Studio, emphasized the strategic significance of selecting Shanghai for this new venture. He noted, “Shanghai is a major fashion hub for locals and tourists, and a proven entry point for premiere brands looking to build their presence in the Asian market.” He further expressed enthusiasm about providing a physical location for consumers, stating, “We recognize how impactful this consumer base is and are excited to bring them a physical touchpoint to experience the Black Suede Studio brand.”

This showroom opening follows a series of recent category expansions for Black Suede Studio. The brand is set to introduce belts and jewelry for the resort 2025 collection and has ventured into the bridal market through a collaboration with esteemed bridal design house Anne Barge. This collaboration premiered at the Bridal Fashion Week in October 2024 and will be available for purchase next month.

In a prior interview with Footwear News in September, Avakian described these new product categories as an organic extension of the brand’s existing offerings. “We want these pieces to be things that can be worn day to night with our main shoe line, so just playing with a lot of clean metals and adding in some minor embellishment details,” he explained. Avakian also shared insights into more intricate and embellished styles intended to complement the evening and bridal shoes.

Alongside the launch of these new product categories, Black Suede Studio is also broadening its operations into licensing under its parent company, BSS Creative Groupe. This strategic move is anticipated to further drive international growth.

“I really don’t like getting comfortable, so one of my goals for 2024 is really to expand the business,” Avakian remarked. He sees the new business strategy as a vital component in achieving significant expansion and enhancing the overall trajectory of Black Suede Studio.
