Stitch Kitchen in Dunedin is gearing up for two fabric-focused fundraising events, featuring a preview sale and a large-scale sale with contributions from the community.
Dunedin’s Stitch Kitchen is set to host two fabric-focused fundraising events in conjunction with iD Dunedin Fashion Week, showcasing the community’s generous contributions. Co-founder and operations manager Fiona Jenkin expressed enthusiasm for the upcoming events at the charity’s headquarters located on Princes Street.
The first event, the Autumn Fabric Sale Preview, is scheduled for next Thursday from 5:30 PM to 7:00 PM. This preview will feature a curated selection of both vintage and contemporary fabrics, patterns, trims, and sewing notions, accompanied by drinks and light refreshments. Attendees will also have the opportunity to hear from designer Sandra Tupu of Flying Fox Clothing, who will speak about the significance of fabric in fashion design.
“We have been sorting out some very special fabrics and items for that event, including silks and vintage trims, and even vintage dress patterns from the 1940s,” Ms. Jenkin told the Otago Daily Times. She emphasized that the event offers a unique way to celebrate the essence of iD Fashion Week while simultaneously promoting their upcoming fabric sale.
Directly following the preview, the Autumn Fabric Sale Fundraiser will take place from next Friday to Sunday at the same location. This extensive sale is anticipated to feature a vast array of donated sewing materials, including approximately 2,000 kilograms of fabrics, patterns, and embroidery supplies.
“We have about 2000kg of fabrics and notions of all descriptions here and ready to go in the sale — all donated by the public from their own collections,” Ms. Jenkin noted, highlighting the immense support from the community. She mentioned that the sale presents a fantastic chance for local sewing enthusiasts to gather materials for winter projects.
Established in 2015, Stitch Kitchen is a charitable trust dedicated to fostering community through creative practices, while also addressing the issue of textile waste. The organization not only facilitates fabric sales but also conducts workshops and classes aimed at teaching mending and sewing skills.
The proceeds from both the preview and the fabric sale will be directed towards covering the operational costs of Stitch Kitchen, ensuring the charity can continue its mission of promoting creativity and sustainability within the community.
