GoodwillFinds, the online resale marketplace launched by Goodwill in 2022, has officially ceased operations, struggling against fierce competition in the sector.

GoodwillFinds, the online resale marketplace launched by Goodwill in 2022, has officially ceased operations as of March 28, 2023. The nonprofit thrift chain, which manages over 3,300 physical locations across the United States, announced the shutdown through a notice on its website, thanking customers for their loyalty and support during the platform’s brief existence.

Initially conceived as Goodwill’s first centralized online business, GoodwillFinds allowed various Goodwill stores to list thrifted items directly on the site. Products listed on GoodwillFinds were shipped directly to customers from the individual stores, creating a unique model within the resale market. However, the marketplace has now officially stopped taking new orders, indicating the termination of its services.

While GoodwillFinds attempted to establish a foothold in the rapidly evolving online resale environment, it faced significant challenges amid increased competition. Online resale marketplaces such as ThredUp, The RealReal, and Poshmark have dominated the sector, presenting a formidable challenge in terms of brand identity and operational efficiency.

Total Retail reports that the discrepancies and challenges related to inventory management and fulfillment processes, which stemmed from relying on individual stores to list and ship items, may have contributed to its difficulties. The inconsistent customer experiences across different locations likely hindered GoodwillFinds from gaining traction within an already crowded marketplace.

Despite the closure of GoodwillFinds, Goodwill’s other e-commerce platform, ShopGoodwill, remains operational. This auction-style site continues to offer products from more than 130 Goodwill sellers, enabling shoppers to bid on various items. The move to discontinue GoodwillFinds underscores the complexities involved in online retail, especially in the competitive thrift and resale sectors.
