In honor of the 40th anniversary of its iconic Club C sneaker, Reebok has unveiled a limited edition model featuring premium craftsmanship and a nostalgic design.
In a notable celebration of athletic footwear history, Reebok has launched a limited edition model to commemorate the 40th anniversary of its quintessential sneaker, the Club C. The special edition, titled the Club C 85 Vintage 40th Anniversary, debuted in the spring/summer issue of Shoes Master, showcasing timeless design and quality craftsmanship.
This anniversary model features premium full-grain leather in its upper, a hallmark of the Club C lineage, which enhances both its aesthetic and durability. Accompanying the leather is a gum rubber sole, contributing to a visual appeal that stands out in the current market. The shoe is packaged in a commemorative box that includes various premium items, reflecting its status as a collector’s item. The retail price for this exclusive model is set at ¥18,700.
The Club C originated in 1985 as the Club Champion, designed initially for tennis. This early model merged high-quality natural leather that molds to the foot with a 3/4 cup outsole structure known for its durability and stability, complemented by a diamond outsole pattern suitable for multiple surfaces. The shoe quickly gained popularity, particularly among members of exclusive tennis clubs, thanks to its clean and sophisticated design. It was later rebranded as Club Player when it included a deformed herringbone outsole meant for clay courts, though feedback from users largely favored the original diamond pattern, leading to the Club Player’s brief run.
The women’s variation of the shoe, named Club Classic, was also remarkably successful, especially during the late 1980s and early 1990s, as it catered to the growing female athletic market. Together, the men’s and women’s models saw substantial demand in Japan, with over 10,000 pairs imported at one point to satisfy sneaker enthusiasts.
The Club C’s distinct and simplistic design has allowed it to remain relevant over the decades, acting as a versatile option for both casual and formal wear. It has adorned the feet of individuals from affluent resort areas like Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard to urban settings across the United States.
As the sneaker approaches its 40-year milestone in 2025, it continues to evolve while embodying the spirit of innovation and creativity among designers. Recent collaborations, including those with brands like “Wacko Maria” and “Atmos x LYFT,” have recorded strong sales, indicating that the Club C remains a beloved choice in the sneaker landscape.
The Club C’s enduring legacy and its status as an iconic model for Reebok suggest that it will continue to capture the imagination of both consumers and creators, with new variations on the horizon poised to excite enthusiasts and collectors alike.
