In an exclusive interview, fashion entrepreneur Theo Ngobeni shares insights on his journey in bespoke fashion, emphasizing the importance of passion, resilience, and a customer-centric approach.

In an interview with Lesley Mofokeng of Vutivi Business, Theo Ngobeni, a prominent figure in Johannesburg’s bespoke fashion scene and the founder of Mr.Slimfit, discussed his entrepreneurial journey, detailing the evolution of fashion and its intersection with lifestyle experiences. Known for dressing influential business leaders, Ngobeni emphasizes that fashion has transcended beyond tailored suits to become an immersive experience.

Ngobeni articulated that his path from investment banking to fashion was driven by his passion for style and personal branding. “My journey has been one of passion, resilience, and continuous learning,” he shared. He highlighted that establishing Mr.Slimfit was not just about creating a clothing line but also about crafting a lifestyle that harmonizes luxury fashion with a refined way of living. He acknowledged that the journey has not been devoid of obstacles, but it has also brought significant personal and professional growth.

Reflecting on the toughest lessons he learned, Ngobeni pointed out that passion alone is insufficient for sustained success. He stressed the importance of structure, financial discipline, and strategic planning, stating that a deep understanding of numbers and operational systems is critical alongside the creative aspects of the business.

Ngobeni shared some guiding principles central to his business philosophy: a commitment to excellence and consistency in quality, a customer-centric approach to crafting memorable experiences, and the necessity for innovation and adaptability in a changing business landscape. He noted, “Fashion has become more personalised and experience-driven,” explaining how clients seek tailored solutions that resonate with their identities rather than merely seeking well-fitted attire. The impact of social media has also reshaped interactions between brands and consumers, pushing him to integrate lifestyle components like grooming and wine experiences into the Mr.Slimfit brand.

On essential traits for survival in business, he identified resilience as paramount, given the inevitable challenges faced by entrepreneurs. Building strong networks and having financial intelligence also emerged as crucial factors for sustainability.

Ngobeni’s faith has played a key role in guiding his business decisions. He described it as a foundational support in navigating uncertainties and highlighted that it informs his commitment to values such as integrity and excellence.

Managing Mr.Slimfit has presented challenges, particularly in scaling while preserving brand exclusivity and high standards. The COVID-19 pandemic necessitated a strategic pivot towards digital platforms, which, despite presenting challenges, also opened new avenues for lifestyle offerings and collaborations with other luxury brands.

Reflecting on pivotal moments in his career, Ngobeni recalled the lows of financial strain in the early years, contrasted with the highs of establishing Mr.Slimfit as a recognized luxury brand. One of his proudest moments was witnessing clients confidently donning Mr.Slimfit attire on international platforms, a testament to the brand’s impact.

Looking forward, Ngobeni envisions expanding Mr.Slimfit’s global footprint while enhancing its exclusivity. He highlighted ongoing efforts to cultivate lifestyle-driven experiences and strategic partnerships, particularly with the emergence of Mr.Grapeful, a venture dedicated to merging luxury fashion with wine culture. Additionally, he expressed aspirations to inspire fellow entrepreneurs and to leave a legacy entwined with business and culture.
