The Aboriginal clothing brand Clothing the Gaps will debut in 14 Universal Store locations, promoting cultural awareness through fashion.
Clothing the Gaps, an Aboriginal clothing brand and social enterprise, is set to make its debut in Universal Store locations starting March 26. This significant launch will feature the brand’s collection in 14 Universal Store sites, including flagship locations in Melbourne, Adelaide, Brisbane, and Darwin.
The partnership aims to promote an “ally-friendly” collection consisting of seven distinct pieces. These items are designed with bold messages that honor Aboriginal culture and convey themes of resistance while fostering greater cultural awareness. The launch is described by the company as a milestone for Aboriginal-owned fashion and represents a “major step forward for First Nations representation in mainstream retail.”
Laura Thompson, a Gunditjmara woman and the CEO co-founder of Clothing the Gaps, emphasized the transformative potential of fashion in this initiative. “Fashion is more than just clothing – it’s a platform for change,” Thompson stated. “Our designs are made to educate, empower, and unite people from all walks of life.” Her comments reflect the brand’s commitment to not only providing apparel but also to engaging broader conversations about cultural identity and social justice.
Clothing the Gaps will become the second Aboriginal label to be offered by Universal Store, following the previous inclusion of House of Darwin. This collaboration signals a growing recognition and incorporation of Aboriginal perspectives within mainstream retail outlets.
