Danish designer Anne Sofie Madsen returns with her new label, emphasizing craft and storytelling over traditional notions of wealth in fashion.
At the recent Copenhagen Fashion Week, Danish designer Anne Sofie Madsen debuted her eponymous label, a significant moment that marks her return after a hiatus dedicated to exploring various creative projects. Madsen, who previously honed her skills working with renowned designers like John Galliano and Alexander McQueen, took this opportunity to redefine luxury according to her personal vision. “I didn’t want it to be about wealth or class, but rather craft and storytelling,” she remarked, expressing her shift in perspective on the fashion landscape.
Having launched her label during Copenhagen Fashion Week’s inaugural season, Madsen introduced a collection that not only reflects her artistic evolution but also pays homage to her roots. Each piece is crafted meticulously, embodying her belief that true luxury is measured in the time invested rather than in opulence or status. Madsen explained, “It’s having the space to spend 100 hours on a piece, to sew it by hand, to dye it myself.” This careful consideration of artistry over consumerism is central to her renewed identity as a designer.
Madsen had long recognized that, during her earlier active years prior to 2018, she had “run out of things to say.” To combat this, she took a step back from the fast-paced world of fashion in order to realign with her creative ethos. This break allowed her to immerse herself in other artistic endeavors, such as costume design for contemporary artworks. “It’s been really nice spending three months developing one jacket for an art exhibition,” she shared, highlighting the contrast between that pace and the rapid cycle of fashion.
Her latest collection revisits the themes that first inspired her, emphasizing a return to her hands-on approach to design. Two new chiffon dresses echo the silhouettes of her debut collection, while her ongoing fascination with historical styles allows her to blend past inspirations with contemporary aesthetics. “I think when I was younger, I had a lot to prove. But now I don’t need to fight for a place – I just want to make things that feel right,” Madsen stated. This intimate approach signifies a departure from the commercialism often associated with high fashion, allowing each garment to emerge as a personal narrative rather than just a product.
The collection embodies a tactile experience, merging artistry and functionality. Madsen’s works highlight a dialogue between various contrasts, such as fabric and skin, history and modernity, art and wearable items. Pieces that draw upon Victorian and 1950s silhouettes are reimagined with a contemporary twist, softening their historical constraints through innovative draping techniques. Madsen’s designs, such as shearling coats crafted from recycled jackets, retain their previous stories while being revitalized into modern, wearable art.
Alongside this artistic revival, Madsen’s approach emphasizes the importance of craftsmanship not solely as a means to create fashion but as a way to foster a deeper connection between the creator and the consumer. This latest collection serves as a testament to her dedication to reshaping the narrative of luxury in fashion through thoughtful, handcrafted pieces.
