Brighton: Artist and fashion designer Matt Whistler, known as Artist Dotty, hosted a vibrant installation on Madeira Drive as part of his ‘fashion for peace’ initiative, celebrating community spirit and creativity in the post-Covid landscape, while raising funds through a GoFundMe campaign.

Artist and fashion designer Matt Whistler, known as Artist Dotty, recently organised a vibrant display on Madeira Drive in Brighton on Friday, January 24. This event was part of his ongoing initiative, ‘fashion for peace’, aimed at uniting individuals through the medium of unique wearable art and fashion photography.

The installation attracted considerable attention from passers-by, who expressed a keen interest in participating. Whistler remarked on the engagement of the public, stating, “People were watching and wanting to join in. They wanted to be a part of what was going on.” He noted that the event marked a celebratory return to public gathering, especially significant in the context of recovery following the Covid pandemic. “It was really good fun. It was a nice thing to do especially after Covid. It was a big old blast of colour and fashion. A very unusual thing to see on the seafront,” he added.

In support of his project, Whistler is currently raising funds through a GoFundMe campaign, where he emphasises the enduring appeal of his fashion shoots. He reflects on the resilience of creativity in fostering community bonds, writing, “The ongoing popularity of these shoots, even in the wake of the pandemic, shows the power of creativity to bring people together.” His commentary highlights the positive impact these creative endeavours have had on participants, fostering connection, joy, and wellbeing. He continues to note how these experiences often lead to long-lasting friendships and networks among those involved.

Whistler’s efforts underline the significance of fashion as a catalyst for collective experiences and the role art plays in contemporary society, especially in the wake of challenging times. The event, characterized by its lively atmosphere and community spirit, showcases how vintage-inspired and retro fashion elements can merge to create powerful statements within today’s fast-paced fashion landscape.
