Washington, D.C.: The American Society of Interior Designers releases its 2025 Trends Outlook report, detailing major shifts in the interior design industry, including multigenerational workforces, neuro-inclusive design, outdoor integration, and the role of smart technology in shaping future environments.
The American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) has announced the release of its 2025 Trends Outlook report, which provides an extensive analysis of the ongoing transformations within the interior design sector. Published on 29 January 2025, this report delves into dynamic lifestyle changes, technological advancements, economic factors, and innovative design paradigms that prioritise wellness and sustainability.
Khoi Vo, president and CEO of ASID, highlighted the integral role of design in shaping personal and communal experiences, stating, “Design touches every aspect of our lives, shaping how we work, live, and connect with the world around us.” In discussing the report’s focus, Vo added that it reflects “the transformative power of design in addressing society’s shifting priorities—from fostering wellness and sustainability to embracing technology and cultural storytelling.” The report aims to equip designers with critical insights necessary for creating environments that inspire joy and resilience.
Authored by ASID research fellow Dr. S. Dawn Haynie, alongside contributions from Lindsey Koren, the report predicts several key trends for 2025. One of the standout observations addresses the multigenerational workforce, particularly noting how Generation Z is influencing workplace dynamics. Gen Z professionals are increasingly seeking entrepreneurial paths and rejecting conventional career trajectories, with 75% intending to start their own businesses. This shift has prompted a need for businesses to navigate varying work styles across generations, underscoring the significance of reverse mentoring to bridge generational divides.
Another prominent trend discussed in the report is neuro-inclusive design, where interior spaces are specifically crafted to enhance mental, physical, and emotional well-being. Experts in neuroscience are collaborating with designers to create settings that encourage positive brain function and behaviour. The growing consumer inclination towards toxin-free materials and wellness-oriented features—such as circadian-friendly lighting—signifies a broader cultural shift towards health-conscious living.
The report outlines several market sectors influenced by these evolving trends, with an emphasis on mixing styles and cultural narratives. There is a marked revival of timeless craftsmanship as designers incorporate elements from history, vintage furnishings, and handcrafted details into contemporary spaces. This movement meets the increasing consumer demand for durable, sustainable designs that resonate with personal histories and contribute to waste reduction through reuse.
Outdoor integration also emerged as a critical element of the 2025 design landscape. An emphasis on well-being is fostering spaces that gracefully connect indoor and outdoor environments. Features such as outdoor kitchens and biophilic design augment opportunities for social interaction and engagement with nature. Innovations in materials are allowing for the creation of dual-purpose textiles that suit both outdoor resilience and indoor aesthetics.
Lastly, the report highlights the impact of smart technology and artificial intelligence on interior design practices. These advancements are reshaping residential and commercial settings, promoting energy efficiency and enhanced functionality. As smart home technology becomes more prevalent, properties designed for both new builds and retrofits are increasingly equipped with customised, sustainable features that improve usability and service efficacy in commercial sectors like hospitality and retail.
ASID’s 2025 Trends Outlook is the inaugural entry in a series of three annual reports, which will be followed by the Economic Outlook and the State of Interior Design reports, both scheduled for release later in 2025. Sponsored, in part, by Sherwin-Williams, the Trends Outlook report is available for free to ASID members and can be purchased for $179 by others. Press members interested in obtaining a copy may direct requests to the provided contact.
As ASID approaches its 50th anniversary, the organisation remains dedicated to advocating for impactful design practices and fostering cross-disciplinary relationships in the interior design industry. The foundation believes firmly in the notion that design has the power to enhance lives, making the exploration of these trends particularly significant for the future of interior design.
