Rebeka Hoberman, president of the Schechter Long Island Crochet Club, secures second place in the Fashion Reimagined contest, earning a scholarship and recognition for her brand, Sewchic4u.
Rebeka Hoberman, an aspiring fashion designer and the president of the Schechter Long Island Crochet Club, has achieved recognition for her talents by securing second place in Long Island University’s (LIU) Fashion Reimagined video contest earlier this month. This accolade comes with guaranteed acceptance into the university as well as a scholarship valued at $7,500.
Hoberman’s entry showcased her burgeoning brand, Sewchic4u, which she founded during the summer of 2024. Since its inception, she has been actively promoting the brand on social media platforms, particularly on Instagram, where she has garnered attention for her chic and stylish clothing designs. “I was really inspired by 2000s early fashion,” Hoberman noted, expressing her desire to create comfortable yet fashionable apparel. One of her notable successes includes a viral video that featured a leopard print sweatshirt, which gained traction after being endorsed by a well-known influencer.
The brand’s marketing strategy emphasizes a chic and classy aesthetic, which has been exemplified by junior Layna Botwinick, one of the models for Sewchic4u. “It’s a really fun experience, I think, especially because I’m wearing the clothes that she created, so they feel extra special,” Botwinick stated. She added that she enjoys supporting a small business through her modeling.
In addition to her business endeavors, Hoberman has sought out various opportunities to enhance her fashion knowledge. She attended the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) pre-college program several months ago, where she acquired valuable insights into the fashion industry and even appeared in one of the institution’s promotional videos on Instagram. “I hope she will continue to stay with her craft. She is very creative, and I think there is a bright future ahead of her,” remarked Ms. Markacs, Hoberman’s art teacher at Schechter, who has observed her creative pursuits within the school’s art elective.
Should Hoberman proceed to LIU, she anticipates that it will serve as a strong foundation for her future studies in fashion and marketing. “If I do attend LIU, it’s going to be a great start to learning about the fashion industry and marketing,” she expressed.
Botwinick expressed her pride in being part of Hoberman’s venture, emphasizing the excitement surrounding the brand’s growing popularity and achievements. “I had so much faith in Rebeka when she was talking about creating her brand and to see how much praise it’s getting, how many awards it’s getting – I’m really happy for her,” Botwinick said.
Hoberman’s accomplishments reflect both her ambition in the fashion world and the supportive network of peers and mentors who encourage her creativity and entrepreneurial spirit.
