Several Australian brands are leading the charge in sustainable consumer goods, merging eco-friendliness with style and function across various industries including fashion, beauty, and household care.
In recent advancements within the realm of sustainable consumer products, several Australian companies have made significant strides in combining eco-friendliness with functionality and style. These innovations are reshaping industries including fashion, beauty, and household care.
Earthletica, a pioneering activewear brand, made headlines with the introduction of the first jacket featuring a tapeless zipper at the Paris Olympics swimming trials last June. The jacket is designed not only to be stylish but also to serve a practical purpose as it incorporates a bio-alloy to ensure waterproofing without the use of traditional plastic membranes. Campbell, a representative of Earthletica, noted, “We’re a small company, but we’re the first people in the world to do that because we’re chasing it, constantly looking for innovation, and bringing it to market fast.” The brand’s mission focuses on creating high-performance activewear made entirely from recycled materials while employing zero-waste inventory practices as they grow.
In the beauty sector, Conserving Beauty holds the distinction of being Australia’s first waterless beauty brand, founded by Natassia Grace in 2021. Grace explained her brand’s commitment to sustainability by stating, “I think it’s in our name, we always set out to say, ‘Conserving your beauty and the planet.’ That’s really what we are.” Conserving Beauty offers innovative skincare products designed to minimize water, carbon, and waste consumption. The brand has found success with a diverse consumer base, partnering with notable retailers such as Mecca and Priceline. Additionally, the brand collaborates with Provenance, a leader in sustainable marketing technology, to enhance transparency in its supply chain. Grace attributes the success of Conserving Beauty to its combination of effective products and a transparent supply chain.
Zero Co has also emerged as a notable player since its launch in 2019, providing a range of household and personal care products committed to reducing environmental impact. The brand operates under the mission to ‘untrash the planet’ and has pledged a 10-for-1 initiative, which removes ten bottles worth of plastic pollution from oceans and waterways for every product sold. In a significant shift, Zero Co announced in August last year that it would transition from its previous circular packaging system to an innovative paper-based refill solution named ForeverFill. This new system enhances consumer convenience by allowing users to slide a paper cartridge into a glass bottle, which can be recycled once emptied. Founder Mike Smith stated, “The solution that will have the most impact in the world is the one that the most people will adopt, and convenience rules adoption.” Zero Co plans to expand its retail presence, launching key product lines in supermarkets, pharmacies, and specialty retailers later this year.
These companies signify a broader movement towards sustainable practices across various sectors, illustrating the growing consumer demand for products that align with environmental stewardship. Their developments not only showcase innovation but also highlight potential shifts in consumer habits as sustainability becomes an essential factor in purchasing decisions.
