Designer Bárbara Atanásio presents her latest collection, ‘Prophecy of the Present,’ exploring contemporary life’s chaos and the quest for meaning through fashion.
On March 7, 2025, in Lisbon, designer Bárbara Atanásio showcased her latest collection, “Prophecy of the Present,” a creation aimed at capturing the chaotic essence of contemporary life. This new line is a reflection of our shared realities, marked by digital escapism, irony, and a quest for meaning in an increasingly absurd world.
Atanásio’s journey into the realm of fashion began in her childhood, playing with Barbies, which she describes as her initial experience with style. As she grew, she felt a persistent pull towards the arts, eventually studying History in a bid to pursue a more conventional career. Yet, it was in fashion where her true passion flourished, ultimately leading her to embrace her identity as an artist. “I eventually had to accept that I’m an artist, and fashion is my craft and the way I express myself,” she said in an interview with Vanity Teen.
The designer finds inspiration in the mundane aspects of everyday life, drawing ideas from family, the news, and experiences such as grocery shopping. “My concepts come from ordinary life… I like to create new worlds that explore the story I want to tell in each collection,” she elaborated. Street style photography and specific publications, including Fruits Magazine by Shoichi Aoki, also serve as significant influences for her.
The creative process for Atanásio is fluid. She articulates a method of starting with the elements that excite her at any moment, whether that be materials, colors, or narratives. This approach allows her to weave a cohesive story through her collections. The process transitions from concept development to practical tasks like pattern making and sewing. Ultimately, styling remains a crucial aspect that breathes life into her designs, allowing her to evaluate the overall narrative and incorporate key accessories.
Atanásio’s commitment to sustainability is evident in her choice of materials, which often include natural, upcycled, and deadstock ones. “I really like to explore both materials and techniques,” she explained. Denim and hand knits consistently make appearances in her collections, while she utilizes coloring techniques, such as tie-dye, to enhance the textural richness of her pieces.
Reflecting on her first real collection, a graduate showcase, Atanásio described it as a transformative experience, describing the moment as one of liberation — a chance to fully express her creative vision.
The message of her latest show, “Prophecy of the Present,” speaks to the disordered reality people face today. “We are surviving in this crazy world… trying to rationalize the impossible,” she explained, emphasizing the need for humor and technology as means of coping with daily life.
For those interested in her clothing, Atanásio confirmed that her pieces are available at the Pl’a Arte Creative Room and will soon be accessible online. She also encourages direct communications for purchases through social media.
In terms of future collaborations, Atanásio expresses a desire to work with fellow Portuguese designers, praising the strength found in community. She identifies the potential for dynamic partnerships with brands like Stüssy and Evisu, as well as the intersection of fashion with non-fashion industries.
Looking ahead, her ambitions center around personal and professional growth, emphasizing the importance of authenticity in navigating her identity as a designer. She believes that with proper support, young designers in Portugal can make significant strides in the global fashion scene.
Atanásio advocates for a connection between the Portuguese fashion industry and manufacturing resources, positing that this synergy could foster greater innovation. “We are tiny, but we are really good,” she concluded, highlighting the unique identity and craftsmanship that Portugal offers to the world of fashion.
