Located on Park Place, Boomerang Boutique offers a curated selection of midcentury modern furniture and decor, evolving the vintage shopping experience.
Boomerang Boutique, situated on Park Place near the hospital district, has carved out a unique niche in the local retail landscape. Owners Misty and Jonathan Berumen have reimagined the concept of vintage shopping with a focus on midcentury modern furniture and decor, complemented by selections of art deco pieces. The store also features a selection of clothing items, including a notable 1970s faux fur-trimmed coat.
Misty Berumen elaborated on her vision for the boutique, stating, “My mission when designing this store was that it would not look like a typical antique or vintage shop, with its piles and stacks of cluttered objects haphazardly placed on shelves and the floor in hopes that someone would see some potential in it and buy it. I wanted an organized shop made up of vignettes, defined spaces with furniture and decor arranged as they might be seen in someone’s home.”
The inception of Boomerang Boutique can be traced back to a singular piece of furniture—a Jean Gillon Amazonas Italma sofa, which features Brazilian Rosewood framing and cream leather cushions. Misty, who has a proven track record as a vintage shopper and seller, encountered this particular sofa at a price of $275, accompanied by a matching ottoman priced at $60, a steep discount compared to its typical market value of $8,000 to $10,000.
Upon returning home with her purchase, Misty shared her discovery with Jonathan, leading to an initial reaction of confusion. “Why did you buy a sofa? We don’t need one; where are we going to put it?” Jonathan reportedly asked. Misty explained her plans, saying, “We aren’t going to keep it, we are going to sell it. It’s worth much more than what I paid for it.”
Fueled by this opportunity, the Berumens decided to take the plunge into the retail business, cementing their vision with the establishment of Boomerang Boutique. The store’s distinct approach has not only attracted customers but has also created a space that departs from the conventional antique store model while celebrating the elegance and nostalgia of bygone eras.
