New York: SHAO New York launched its Fall/Winter 2025 collection at New York Fashion Week, featuring AAPI models and inspired by 1930s Shanghai. The event incorporated holographic technology for an immersive experience, blending traditional Chinese aesthetics with modern New York streetwear under the creative direction of Shao Yang.

On February 10, 2025, at New York Fashion Week, SHAO New York launched its latest collection for Fall/Winter 2025 titled “1930’s Shanghai: Paris of the East, New York of the West.” The showcase took place in the elegant House of the Red Pearl, located within the Tin Building by Jean-Georges.

The presentation was noteworthy for featuring a cast entirely composed of AAPI models, reinforcing the brand’s commitment to representation within the fashion industry. The collection draws inspiration from the vibrant and culturally rich milieu of 1930s Shanghai, a time when the city was synonymous with cosmopolitan glamour and cultural fusion. Shao Yang, the founder and designer of SHAO New York, described the collection as a celebration of the “electricity of cultural blending” reimagined for contemporary audiences.

The theme of the collection encapsulates a narrative that interweaves traditional Chinese aesthetics with Western tailoring and modern New York streetwear. Yang articulated the intention behind each piece, stating that they were designed to reflect “the delicate balance and tension between tradition and rebellion, propriety and danger—all feelings that resonated throughout Shanghai in the 1930s.”

To enhance the storytelling aspect of the collection, SHAO New York collaborated with DataVault to bring cutting-edge holographic technology into the presentation. Spectacular highlights included a holographic parlor singer, intricate projection displays illustrating detailed embroidery and pleats, and interactive features powered by DataVault’s ADIO® technology. These innovations provided attendees with a multi-sensory experience, uniting traditional craftsmanship with elements of futuristic artistry.

The hair and makeup for the show were crafted by notable artists in the industry. Ted Gibson served as the key hair lead, while Romero Jennings led the makeup department for MAC Cosmetics. Both contributed to the overall aesthetic that complemented the rich narrative presented through the clothing.

The event also recognised contributions from various collaborative partners, including Michael Eland for creative direction and casting, Nolcha Production for event management, and several sponsors such as BrightCheck, which supported the production alongside venues like House of the Red Pearl and the Tin Building.

This collection not only highlights the artistic vision of SHAO New York but also serves as a significant reflection of the historical and cultural landscapes that continue to inspire and influence modern fashion narratives.
