Since 2020, Bristol’s Reuse Shops have successfully sold or donated 250,000 items, promoting sustainability and inspiring similar initiatives across the UK.
Bristol’s Reuse Shops, an initiative by Bristol Waste Company, have marked a significant achievement by selling or donating 250,000 items since their inception in 2020. This milestone not only highlights the success of the program but also signals a shift in the city’s perspective on waste management.
Located initially at the Avonmouth Household Reuse and Recycling Centre, the Reuse Shops have expanded to include additional sites at Hartcliffe Way and St Philip’s. These shops have become essential for the local community by offering a range of second-hand goods, including furniture, homeware, computers, DIY tools, and sports equipment, all at affordable prices.
Since the Reuse Shops’ launch, the initiative has successfully diverted hundreds of tonnes of materials from being sent to landfills or incineration. In 2024, alone, more than 80,000 items found new purposes through the program. The project’s impact has been significant enough to inspire other councils across the UK to consider similar waste reduction strategies.
Jak Boydon, the reuse growth manager at Bristol Waste, emphasized the importance of this accomplishment, stating, “Reaching 250,000 items sold is a monumental achievement. This success reflects Bristol Waste’s commitment to sustainability and the hard work of our Reuse Shop team and volunteers. I want to thank the city’s residents who have chosen to donate or shop with us as without their support we wouldn’t be here. Every item diverted represents a step towards reducing waste and conserving our planet’s valuable resources.”
Judith Gordon, the shop manager at the Avonmouth Reuse Shop, shared stories that illustrate the positive impact of the initiative on local residents. She mentioned encounters with customers who have benefited from the affordable prices, including a mother who refurbished her son’s room entirely with items from the shop, and another local resident who renovated her bathroom with purchases made at the store.
The proceeds from sales at the Reuse Shops also contribute to charitable causes, with St Peter’s Hospice receiving just over £40,000 to date from the initiative.
Looking toward the future, Bristol Waste aims to further expand its reuse efforts, focusing on increasing the number of items diverted from waste streams. Currently, the organization sells between 7,000 and 8,000 items each month, responding to the rising demand for affordable second-hand goods.
Boydon added, “We’re proud to share our knowledge with other organisations, working towards a common goal of reducing waste nationwide.”
The Reuse Shops at Avonmouth and Hartcliffe Way are accessible to the public five days a week, including weekends, with operating hours from 9:30 AM to 3:30 PM. The constantly changing inventory assures that visitors may discover a range of items, from everyday essentials to unique finds.
