In Brussels, the luxury consignment shop Les Enfants d’Édouard is witnessing a significant shift in consumer behavior towards second-hand luxury items. Located on the high-end Avenue Louise, the boutique has been a prominent player in the luxury consignment sector for over five decades. Clara Lyonnet, a sales advisor at the store, noted, “It’s simple, everyone is getting involved,” indicating the growing acceptance and enthusiasm for second-hand luxury goods among customers.

Historically, Les Enfants d’Édouard catered to a niche market, primarily focused on evening dresses. However, customer interest has expanded dramatically over the years. Lyonnet commented on the transformation, noting that the clientele has broadened and “second-hand has truly been embraced.” Today, the boutique features a diverse selection of high-end brands including Balenciaga, Céline, Acne Studio, Prada, Chanel, and Dior, among others. Notably, items like a recently sold Dior bag can fly off the shelves in just two days, highlighting the rapid turnover of sought-after pieces.

The boutique’s model emphasizes both selection and quality. Lyonnet described that they maintain a dual section for luxury designs and more accessible ready-to-wear items. The pricing strategy is another draw for consumers, with many pieces offered at half or even lower than their original retail prices. This pricing structure appeals to a wide array of customers, from young adults searching for a standout outfit for an event to older shoppers with more disposable income seeking quality items.

Les Enfants d’Édouard operates on a consignment basis, allowing individuals to entrust their clothing, bags, and accessories to be sold in the store. The boutique ensures item authenticity, an important aspect given the prevalence of counterfeiting in the online marketplace. Lyonnet emphasized their commitment to quality assurance by stating, “Unlike certain online platforms where there are risks of counterfeiting, we guarantee the origin of the articles we offer.”

The rise of the second-hand luxury market is also being embraced by online resale platforms. In 2022, Vinted, a prominent name in the second-hand clothing sector, expanded into luxury items by acquiring Rebelle, a German marketplace focusing on high-end fashion. The platform’s strategic move aims to compete with established players like Vestiaire Collective, which currently leads the luxury resale market. A representative from Vinted explained, “The second-hand fashion market, including luxury items, still has immense growth potential. More and more consumers are choosing second-hand every day.”

Les Enfants d’Édouard has recognized the importance of maintaining a presence in the online market and recently launched their e-shop, indicating a strategic adaptation to the industry’s evolving landscape. As the demand for second-hand luxury continues to grow, both physical boutiques and online platforms are increasingly catering to consumers’ preferences for sustainable shopping practices and high-quality items at reduced prices.
