The Handmade Market in Canberra will return on March 29, 2025, featuring over 260 stallholders and promoting a philosophy of slow and sustainable shopping.

The Handmade Market in Canberra is set to take place on Saturday, March 29, 2025, starting at 10 a.m. at Exhibition Park, celebrating its 17th anniversary. The event, which began in 2008 with a modest 35 stallholders at Albert Hall, has grown exponentially to showcase handmade Australian products from more than 260 stallholders and attract over 20,000 shoppers each market.

Julie Nichols, the founder of Handmade, envisioned a space where Australian makers could directly connect with consumers, and over the years, the market has become a regional draw, supporting small businesses and promoting a philosophy of “slow and sustainable shopping.” Reflecting on the market’s growth, Julie stated, “Back in 2008 I never could have imagined how large the market would grow over the next 17 years. But I am so proud of the support we have received and what we have done to support small businesses in Australia!”

Among the participating artisans is Sydney jeweller Melaney McCleary, who designs her Ant Haus range using 100 percent recycled materials. Melaney highlighted the value of Handmade by expressing that it offers an opportunity for direct interaction with customers, fostering long-term relationships and a deeper understanding of her craft. “Handmade gives people an opportunity to touch and feel the product, to speak directly with me about my methods and designs,” she explained.

The market has also made significant contributions to local charities, raising hundreds of thousands of dollars for organizations like Givit, Rise Above, and Dragons Abreast by asking attendees to donate a gold coin as an entry fee. Julie shared insights about the challenges of organizing such a large event with a small team, emphasizing the need to find creative solutions given the limited facilities available in Canberra.

This upcoming market promises an exciting array of hand-crafted products, food options, and an inviting atmosphere defined by a unique “Handmade energy.” Julie encourages people to experience the market firsthand, highlighting that shopping at Handmade supports Australian small businesses committed to sustainable and high-quality craftsmanship.

Among the new stalls, attendees can expect offerings from Cheeky Crumbles, Cypher Brewing Co., and Tarago Cheese, along with homewares from Sogo Ceramics and sustainable fashion by Lumi Clothing. Additionally, handmade children’s crayons by Tinta Crayons will be available for purchase.

With a diverse collection of handmade goods, the Handmade Market continues to emphasize the importance of thoughtful and sustainable purchasing choices while fostering a vibrant community of makers and consumers alike.
