Cencosud’s strategic acquisition of Vopero marks an expansion into the sustainable fashion market, promoting a circular model for garment resale.

Cencosud, a leading retail company in Latin America, has announced its acquisition of a majority stake in Vopero, a technology startup specializing in the resale of garments through a circular model in the fashion industry. This strategic move marks the beginning of Cencosud’s expansion of the Paris brand in Chile, which aims to position itself as a leader in sustainable fashion.

The announcement was made on March 31, 2025, as Cencosud seeks to enhance its commitment to sustainability by promoting a curated selection of second-hand garments, primarily targeted at female consumers. This venture aligns with a broader trend in the industry toward responsible consumption and circular fashion practices.

Vopero, founded in 2020 by Uruguayan entrepreneurs Maggie Ferber, Alejandro Esperanza, and Ignacio Cattivelli, has rapidly gained recognition, catching the attention of prominent investors including Grupo AXO and thredUP. The platform has quickly established itself by providing a unique marketplace where users can buy and sell pre-owned clothing, having successfully re-circulated over two million high-quality garments to date. As Vopero continues to grow, it aims to reduce the environmental impact that the textile industry traditionally poses.

Juan Luis Taverne, General Manager of Paris, remarked, “This emblematic project consolidates Paris as a key player in driving the growing sustainable fashion market. We have been focused on sustainability for more than 12 years and for over five years promoting circular fashion and responsible consumption; this takeover will accelerate that journey and solidify our commitment to circular fashion.” He emphasized the potential for creating new synergies with various Cencosud businesses across the region.

The partnership follows Cencosud’s previous involvement with Vopero, which began a year ago when it joined the startup’s board. Their initial collaboration included the introduction of two physical sales points and a presence on the online platform Paris.cl, which has since expanded to six locations that serve as both retail and drop-off spots.

In her comments on the acquisition, Maggie Ferber, founder and CMO of Vopero, stated, “Cencosud and Paris’s investment in Vopero is another vote of confidence that circular fashion is much more than just fashion. The anticipated acceleration in Chile over the coming years motivates us to continue seeking new ways to generate impact, with Vopero being the engine of an ecosystem that connects with all areas of Cencosud.”

Looking ahead, Vopero is set to advance its expansion plans in Chile, which include the establishment of corner stores within existing Paris locations and the launch of stores in Cencosud’s shopping centers. Additionally, it aims to integrate a second-hand online catalog into its marketplace, further diversifying its offerings both in retail and digital realms while adhering to environmentally responsible practices.
