Chris Gibbs is set to launch a highly anticipated third version of the Union LA x Air Jordan 1 sneaker along with an apparel collection, paying homage to the original designs.
Chris Gibbs, a prominent figure in the sneaker and streetwear industry, is set to release a highly anticipated third iteration of the Union LA x Air Jordan 1 sneaker, alongside an apparel collection. This latest collaboration pays homage to the original Air Jordan 1 designs and will be available exclusively on the Union website on February 27, 2025, at 8 AM PST.
Gibbs first made waves in 2018 when he introduced a groundbreaking take on the iconic Air Jordan 1 silhouette. His innovative mix-and-match approach resonated within the sneaker community, effectively blending vintage aesthetics with modern, DIY sensibilities. Citing the influence of 144 potential combinations derived from a dozen original colors from 1985, Gibbs curated a selection of popular colors that still resonate with sneaker enthusiasts today.
In an extensive interview with Sneaker News Editor-in-Chief John Kim, Gibbs reflected on the journey behind his Air Jordan 1 collaboration and its lasting impact on sneaker culture. He noted that part of the collaboration’s success stems from his personal story, stating, “Sometimes it’s still like wow, Jordan is reaching out to the small guy. Me? I’m gonna be in this commercial that’s gonna play in the Super Bowl?”
Additionally, Gibbs shared insights into his experience participating in Jordan Brand’s “Unbannable” campaign, which was shot during New York Fashion Week last September. Initially presented with the opportunity as a simple photoshoot, Gibbs quickly realized the scale of the project upon arriving at the set, where he encountered renowned figures in the fashion and music industry, further illustrating the high-profile nature of the collaboration.
Gibbs expressed admiration for Hiroshi Fujiwara, whom he described as a pivotal influence in streetwear and sneaker culture. He pointed out that the evolution of streetwear as we know it today owes much to the interplay between cities like New York and Tokyo, highlighting Fujiwara’s key role in bridging these two influential scenes.
Regarding the upcoming release, Gibbs emphasized that his meticulous attention to detail is reflected in the shoe’s design and material quality. He explained that the combination of specific leathers and a design that allows the shoe to “wear really well” contributes to its enduring appeal. Often noting the charm of a well-worn sneaker, he mentioned that “the shoes age really, really well. It’s one of the shoes that might look even better when it’s beat down.”
In discussing the unreleased UNC/Royal sample, Gibbs explained the complications that prevented its production. He expressed his frustration with the situation, clarifying that the limitations arose from factory production realities rather than any decision by him or Jordan Brand. He revealed that he currently holds 100 pairs of the UNC version, hinting at potential plans to either auction them for charity or find another purpose for them.
Looking ahead, Gibbs is optimistic about future collaborations with Jordan Brand, teasing the forthcoming partnership with Fujiwara’s Fragment Design and expressing an interest in exploring new silhouettes beyond the Air Jordan 1.
The Union LA x Air Jordan 1 and accompanying apparel collection stands as a testament to the evolving landscape of sneaker culture, with Gibbs at the helm continuing to shape its trajectory. The anticipated launch is expected to attract significant attention from sneaker aficionados and casual buyers alike.
