New York: Celebrated designer Christian Siriano unveiled his latest collection at New York Fashion Week, blending glamour and automotive design. The show featured a striking red Toyota and a star-studded front row, showcasing a commitment to inclusivity and philanthropy amid a vibrant fashion display.
During New York Fashion Week, celebrated designer Christian Siriano unveiled his latest collection, drawing inspiration from his passion for cars, a shared interest he has nurtured with his father. The event, held on a Thursday, was marked by an atmosphere of excitement as models paraded in front of an audience that included notable celebrities and fashion industry insiders. The runway, adorned with lush rose beds, featured a bright red and black Toyota, symbolising the collection’s automotive theme.
Siriano’s collection showcased an array of feminine and glamorous looks, challenging the traditional masculinity often associated with automobiles. “The lines of a car to me look like the lines of a corset,” he said, effectively merging the worlds of fashion and automotive design. His designs included jersey fabrics resembling oil slicks, intricate embroidery mimicking tire tracks, and bell bottoms inspired by the leather of car interiors. “I was like, who doesn’t love that iconic, sexy red car? But who doesn’t love that iconic, sexy red dress? And how do they kind of go together?” Siriano reflected, emphasising the playful interplay between these two aesthetics.
The show highlighted the contrast between masculine and feminine styles, exemplified by longtime model Coco Rocha, who donned a striking black tuxedo blazer mini dress with cascading red silk, complementing the car’s colours. Male models participated enthusiastically, showcasing abs beneath glossy cropped jackets paired with wide-leg trousers.
The front row of the show included a star-studded guest list, with actors such as Katie Holmes, Julianne Hough, and Whoopi Goldberg applauding the showcased designs. Actress Tiffany Haddish expressed her admiration for Siriano’s work, stating that she feels “beautiful in all of Siriano’s clothes.” Another guest, Bronwyn Newport from “The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City,” complemented the collection while wearing a previous show creation, declaring it Siriano’s best show yet and expressing a desire for every look presented.
Siriano transformed the Chelsea industrial venue for the event, enveloping the space in a sea of red, from draped walls to red gift bags and a vibrant carpet. Renowned for his innovative red carpet looks, Siriano embodies a commitment to body positivity and inclusivity. Laverne Cox praised his dedication, noting, “Over the years, as my body has changed, Christian has always been supportive and had something fabulous for me to wear. Like he has such a diverse range as a designer.” Siriano’s history of creating memorable pieces for high-profile events includes a standout moment at the 2019 Oscars, where he dressed Billy Porter in a velvety tuxedo ball gown.
The show concluded dramatically, as a switch to violin melodies accompanied models in see-through, abstract corseted gowns posing before the Toyota, embodying the elegance and flair of both the runway and red carpet.
Beyond the glitz and glamour, Siriano demonstrated a commitment to philanthropy by pledging to raise funds to support victims affected by the recent wildfires in Los Angeles. He mentioned raising money through the sale of his own paintings and donating ticket sales from his fashion show. “We had people buy tickets that aren’t even attending, which was so wonderful,” he stated. “Nobody needs me to donate clothes.”
Siriano’s latest presentation not only celebrated vintage-inspired aesthetics but also highlighted the evolving relationship between fashion history and contemporary style, shaping the wardrobes of today’s celebrities and fostering a spirit of inclusivity in the fashion industry.
