A collective known as the ‘Gang of the Plump’ hosts a clothing swap to promote body positivity and sustainability on March 22 in Charleroi.
A clothing swap event organized by a collective known as the “gang of the plump” is set to take place on March 22, from 2 PM to 6 PM, at the café-restaurant Notre Maison, located at 169 Boulevard Tirou in Charleroi. This initiative is backed by women from various organizations, including Soralia, Présence et Action culturelle, MOC Charleroi-Thuin, and Vie Féminine, who seek to challenge and expand the representation of body sizes in the fashion industry.
Sarah Cravotta, a representative of the organizing group, noted the significance of the event in addressing the challenges faced by individuals whose shapes and curves do not conform to mainstream fashion standards. “In addition to allowing our visitors to find clothes that fit them, this clothing swap, by necessity, will contribute to circular economy, in a sector like textile manufacturing, where we know waste is significant,” Cravotta explained.
The clothing swap is part of a broader program celebrating Women’s Month, which aims to highlight various issues concerning women’s rights and representation. In conjunction with the swap, a reflective session is scheduled from 3:30 PM to 5 PM, where attendees will have the opportunity to discuss the subject of fatphobic violence observed in public spaces within Charleroi. “Where and how does fatphobia manifest in Charleroi? These are the questions we are going to answer,” Cravotta concluded, emphasizing the importance of dialogue around this pressing social issue.
The event represents not just an opportunity for individuals to exchange clothing but also a platform for raising awareness and discussing the broader implications of body diversity and acceptance within society.
