Second Impressions Thrift Store provides affordable shopping options while relying on dedicated volunteers to support local causes.
In Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, a community initiative is addressing the pressing issue of high consumer prices through the operations of a local thrift store that not only offers affordable shopping but also promotes community involvement. The Second Impressions Thrift Store relies on a dedicated team of 150 volunteers to maintain its service and support local causes.
Jill and Terry Reynolds, a couple with 49 years of marriage, are among the volunteers who play a significant role in the store’s operations. Now retired, the Reynolds work together at Second Impressions, contributing their time and effort to a place they describe as fulfilling. “He knows I’m the boss anyways,” Jill remarked, highlighting the familial camaraderie that is characteristic of the store’s volunteer efforts. Terry added, “We work really well together,” reinforcing the cooperative spirit evident among the volunteers.
The thrift store’s mission is centered on providing the Fond du Lac community with an affordable shopping option, particularly during a time when many families are feeling the strain of rising prices. “It’s very rewarding to see people who are able to buy, I mean, clothes for their kids, stuff for an apartment… and to be able to afford it because, like you said, it is expensive and some people just really can’t,” said Shirley Rose, another volunteer at the store. Her comments underscore the important role Second Impressions plays in helping families find necessary items without overspending.
In addition to fulfilling shopper needs, the thrift store has a charitable component; it donates its profits to local organizations, including the Winnebago Lutheran Academy and various community causes. This dual purpose of providing affordable goods while giving back to the community makes Second Impressions a significant asset to Fond du Lac.
“Having customers get so excited when they find something that they weren’t even looking for,” Ardis Weigand, another volunteer, shared, reflects the joy and surprise shoppers experience at the store. The enthusiasm and satisfaction of customers have become a hallmark of the shopping experience offered by Second Impressions.
For those interested in volunteering or learning more about the thrift store, Jill encourages participation, saying, “I recommend it to anyone looking for a volunteer opportunity.” The store has made efforts to reach a broader audience, with additional information available on its Facebook page and website. The community-oriented approach of Second Impressions Thrift Store continues to foster a sense of togetherness and support in Fond du Lac as it serves both the economic and social needs of its residents.
