Tokyo: Converse is preparing to unveil the ALL STAR LGCY, a modern take on its iconic sneakers, at select stores across Japan, including stacks bookstore in Jinbocho, showcasing a blend of culture, style, and comfort for a diverse audience.

In February 2025, Converse is set to launch its latest flagship model, the ALL STAR LGCY, inspired by the classic ALL STAR basketball shoes that first hit the market in 1917. Remaining faithful to the original design, the ALL STAR LGCY combines elements from the 1970s model with modern aesthetics and comfort, appealing not only to long-time Converse enthusiasts but also to individuals who may not have connected with the brand before. The sneaker aims to refresh personal styles across a diverse audience.

The launch will see the ALL STAR LGCY showcased in six select stores across Japan, including the renowned stacks bookstore located in Jinbocho. As a unique establishment, stacks bookstore, founded by Maruo Yamashita, transcends the conventional idea of a bookstore by providing a space for curated zines, art exhibitions, apparel sales, and a bar serving local craft beer, wine, and sake. Maruo Yamashita’s vision revolves around blending various cultures rather than confining his focus to a single genre. He reflected on the bookstore’s beginnings, noting, “six or seven years ago, we participated in the TOKYO ART BOOK FAIR and decided to establish stacks as a separate entity, eventually opening our store in Kamiyama-cho in 2021.” After relocating to Jinbocho in March of last year, the store expanded its offerings, embracing diverse interests while maintaining a commitment to quality and exploration in culture.

Collaboration with Converse has previously yielded an all-black pair, resonating with shoppers for their unique blend of simplicity and versatility. “I don’t like shoes that are overly defined,” Yamashita remarked. “The ALL STAR LGCY allows for effortless integration into our eclectic space.” The understated yet impactful design of the new sneaker aligns with his approach to the styled environment of stacks bookstore.

Staff member Shimoda, who has worn ALL STAR shoes since his student days, echoed similar sentiments. He values the shoes for their comfort and adaptability, stating, “they are incredibly easy to wear and go well with anything. My friends and I used to lace them tightly double-knotting them.” His experience with ALL STAR shoes transcends mere fashion, becoming a symbol of familiarity for him. As he tries the new ALL STAR LGCY in green, he appreciates its ability to complement various outfits without overwhelming them.

The collaboration has allowed stacks bookstore to curate a distinct identity while engaging with the rich history of Converse shoes. Shimoda, reflecting on his personal style choices, appreciates the freedom the ALL STAR LGCY offers for self-expression. He employs his own lace-tying method for practicality and aesthetic, blending modern interpretations with traditional footwear sensibilities. This adaptability suggests that the ALL STAR LGCY not only pays homage to its past but also respects its role in current fashion culture.

Overall, the ALL STAR LGCY serves as a versatile platform for personal expression, ready to adapt to the diverse lifestyles of those who choose to wear them. The collaboration between stacks bookstore and Converse highlights how fashion can be a synthesis of cultural influences, resulting in a product that resonates across various themes and narratives in modern society.
