Delhi: In Malviya Nagar, the Navjivan Vihar society has successfully operated a zero-waste initiative for a decade, preventing 225 kg of waste daily. Their practices include strict waste segregation, a community fridge for surplus meals, and composting, inspiring admiration and interest across social media.

In the Malviya Nagar area of South Delhi, a residential society known as Navjivan Vihar has emerged as a compelling model of waste management, successfully operating under a zero-waste initiative for the past decade. The initiative, driven by the community’s collective effort, has made a significant impact by preventing approximately 225 kg of waste from ending up in landfills every day.

The waste management system implemented by the residents centres around the strict segregation of dry and wet waste. After a recent video showcasing their efforts gained traction on social media, the community’s practices have attracted widespread attention. The video, shared by a content creator on Instagram, offers a glimpse into the society’s comprehensive waste management setup, where residents are committed to composting kitchen scraps and sharing excess food via a community fridge.

The community fridge serves as a critical resource, allowing residents to donate surplus meals that anyone in need can retrieve. This approach not only minimises food waste but also fosters a sense of solidarity within the community.

In addition to their waste management efforts, Navjivan Vihar operates a donation centre where residents can drop off used clothes and household items. These donations are then channelled to non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and individuals in need, further reinforcing the community’s commitment to sustainability and support for the underprivileged.

A significant aspect of this initiative is the composting process. Rather than discarding kitchen waste, residents convert it into nutrient-rich compost that nourishes their gardens, contributing to a greener environment. This innovative practice involves over 250 households, underscoring the community’s dedication to maintaining cleanliness and sustainability.

The viral video has sparked a wave of admiration across social media platforms, with users commending the residents for their commitment to eco-friendly practices. Comments reflecting this admiration include, “Navjivan Vihar has really set a great example for everyone,” and “Brilliant! Hope every colony follows this model.” Some viewers have even enquired about how they might implement similar systems in independent housing scenarios, highlighting the broader impact of this initiative.

The Economic Times is reporting on this emerging trend in community-led waste management, showcasing how collective action and commitment can foster significant environmental benefits.
