Derby Market Hall, a Grade II-listed building, will reopen on May 24 after a £35.1 million refurbishment, introducing a mix of traditional and contemporary traders aimed at revitalizing the local shopping and dining scene.
Derby Market Hall, a Grade II-listed Victorian building undergoing a £35.1 million refurbishment, is set to reopen its doors on May 24. This project, spearheaded by Derby City Council, aims to usher in “a new era for Derby’s independent shopping, dining, and entertainment scene.” The council has unveiled the first line-up of traders who will occupy the newly revamped space, promising a diverse mix of traditional and contemporary offerings.
Among the highlighted traders is Bailey’s Fishmongers, a family-run business that has been a staple in the Market Hall for 65 years. Despite the ongoing refurbishment, Bailey’s has continued to operate from its current location in the Lock-Up Yard area. Established by Stuart Bailey’s father over a century ago, the fishmongers continue to provide fresh fish and seafood products for both families and local businesses.
Councillor Nadine Peatfield, the council leader, expressed enthusiasm about the opening, stating, “I am incredibly excited to announce the first traders who will be moving into Derby Market Hall. From international street food to sustainable fashion, the new (and old) traders each have something truly special to offer to every resident and visitor.” She emphasized the anticipation surrounding the newly curated roster of traders and the revitalized space.
The initial lineup of businesses set to join the Market Hall includes:
-

-
Nico’s Gelato and Coffee: Founded by an Italian immigrant, this Derby-based business is set to provide artisan gelato, hot drinks, and Italian pastries, drawing on Nico’s cherished memories of summers in Italy.
-

As the reopening date approaches, more traders are expected to be announced, further expanding the eclectic offerings at the Derby Market Hall. The transformation of the space highlights the commitment of Derby City Council to rejuvenate the local shopping and dining landscape, inviting both residents and visitors to explore what the revamped market has to offer.
