The iconic brand launches the 1460 Made in England Pascal Love Letter Boot to commemorate its milestone, featuring unique craftsmanship and cultural significance.
On Tuesday, Dr. Martens commemorated the 65th anniversary of its iconic 1460 boot with the launch of a limited-edition release. The new iteration, named the 1460 Made in England Pascal Love Letter Boot, is available for purchase at a price of $460, with only 1,460 pairs produced to mark the milestone.
The 1460 boot itself draws its name from its creation date of April 1, 1960, and has become a significant symbol in both fashion and cultural history. The design is noted for its blend of British shoemaking craftsmanship and the innovative “bouncing” sole technology from Germany. Over the decades, the 1460 has transitioned from utilitarian wear for workers to a staple worn by notable musicians and artistic figures worldwide.
Manufactured at Dr. Martens’ original factory located in Wollaston, Northamptonshire, England, the Pascal Love Letter Boot is a testament to the brand’s dedication to quality. It features a rich burgundy color crafted from full-grain calf leather supplied by C.F. Stead, a tannery based in Leeds that has collaborated with Dr. Martens since the 1980s. The company explained that the leather’s “rich color and blend of natural waxes and oils give it a subtle pull-up that will develop uniquely to each wearer over time — a story written in leather.”
Distinctive details of the boot include contrast stitching that references earlier designs of the classic style, as well as the debossed date “1.4.60” on the tongue, which signifies the boot’s historical significance. Other features include an embossed leather heel loop, antique gold eyelets, and tonal laces. True to its heritage, the boot also showcases hallmark design elements such as the yellow welt stitch, grooved sidewall, Puritan stitching, and an exclusive undersole pattern.
Adam Owen, the global design director at Dr. Martens, elaborated on the cultural resonance of the 1460 boot, stating, “Dr. Martens 1460 boots have always been about more than just footwear – they’re a symbol of individuality, resilience, and rebellion. Over the years, they’ve been worn by everyone from the punks of the ’70s to the grunge scene of the ‘90s, and now by today’s creatives and fashion designers making waves. Dr. Martens has always been a blank canvas for self-expression. We don’t tell people how to wear them; we simply create boots that are built to last and let the wearer tell their own story.”
The launch of the limited-edition boot coincides with Dr. Martens’ recent reveal of collaborations, including one with the popular doll franchise Bratz, which is set to feature three footwear styles inspired by the Y2K aesthetics associated with the dolls. Earlier this year, the brand also introduced its Year of the Snake collection in celebration of the Lunar New Year, further showcasing its commitment to innovation and cultural relevance.
