The British actress and her husband Greg Wise turn heads at the iconic event, showcasing elaborate costumes and embracing the vibrant festivities.

Dame Emma Thompson made a stunning appearance at the Carnival of Venice, an event renowned for its extravagant costumes, intricate masks, and vibrant atmosphere. The 65-year-old British actress and screenwriter was accompanied by her husband, Greg Wise, 58, as they participated in the festivities held in the picturesque Italian city.

Thompson turned heads with her eye-catching outfit, opting for a dramatic period gown that featured a corseted design in shades of red and white lace, complemented by gold accents. She accessorized her look with a matching handbag, a flowing white cape, and a pair of elegant white lace gloves. A standout element of her costume was a gold theatrical mask adorned with cream and light pink feathers, in addition to a white Baroque wig and gold platform heels. Thompson also donned a delicate red choker necklace, completing her opulent appearance.

Her husband, Greg Wise, embraced the Carnival spirit with a striking ensemble of his own. He wore a cream jacquard print Baroque Venetian coat and paired it with a black ruffled collar shirt, grey satin knee-length capris, and black tights, topped off with Baroque loafers. Wise also sported a white-period wig along with a bejeweled hat that further enhanced his costume.

The couple was seen strolling through the sun-drenched streets of Venice, capturing memorable moments on one of the city’s iconic bridges and engaging with fans eager to snap photos with the beloved duo. Their participation in the Carnival came as the event approaches its conclusion, occurring annually in the lead-up to Lent, starting two weeks before Ash Wednesday and culminating on Shrove Tuesday.

The Carnival of Venice has a rich history, originating in the 11th century with a two-month-long celebration that eventually waned in popularity by the 18th century. However, it saw a revival in 1979, and today, it attracts countless mask-clad revelers who enjoy live music and festivities in the heart of Venice.

In recent conversations about her views on the film industry, Thompson has expressed concerns regarding the opportunities available for women compared to their male counterparts. Speaking to various media outlets, she remarked on the systemic disparities, stating, “It would be great if the film industry would allow women to fail – that would be great, and to try again.” She highlighted that men often receive repeated opportunities even after failures, while women face harsher judgments and receive limited chances. “Women fail once and then it’s, ‘oh well you don’t get to do this again,'” she noted.

Thompson’s commitment to discussing these issues seems more pertinent as she prepares for her upcoming role as private detective Zoë Boehm in the new Apple TV+ series “Down Cemetery Road.” The actress was recently spotted on set, showcasing a drastically different appearance with her hair styled in a spiky fashion and dramatic smoky eye makeup to portray the character effectively.

As the couple continues to enjoy the carnival, their engagement with such vibrant cultural festivities adds to the rich tapestry of the Carnival of Venice, celebrating not only the historical significance of the event but also the lively spirit of its participants.
