Emmaus Bolton’s Scrap Store engages locals in creative reuse during Repair Week, helping to reduce waste while providing art supplies and crafting opportunities.

Emmaus Bolton’s “Scrap Store” located on Fletcher Street is making strides in sustainability by offering a diverse selection of recycled fabric and other art and craft supplies. In a bid to promote the reuse of materials during national Repair Week, the store invited attendees to participate in a workshop where they could select their own fabric free of charge.

The workshop, which aimed to engage the community in creative reuse, saw participation from local residents including Sarah Platt from Bolton. Platt expressed her satisfaction with the course, remarking, “It’s been a great, lovely introductory course for making my own draught excluder. At the moment my heater’s not working, so it will be a godsend. I’ve really enjoyed it. Just a quick one-hour workshop and I’ve managed to make a full item. There’s a great team here. They’re lovely people to meet as well.”

Emmaus Bolton operates with a mission to reduce landfill waste by repurposing “end-of-line,” donated, and surplus items. Proceeds generated from the sale of materials at the Scrap Store contribute to the charity’s efforts in providing homes, work experience, and opportunities for homeless individuals in the community.

Leading the workshop was Becca Coleman, who dedicates her Fridays to volunteering at the store. Coleman is actively involved in turning fabric into new items for sale and preparing textiles for display. Speaking to The Bolton News, she emphasized the value of the Scrap Store, stating, “The Scrap Store is a brilliant resource for anyone thinking about starting a new hobby or sourcing art and craft for a project they are passionate about. The upcycling session was a great way to demonstrate what we do to help people get started on their journeys towards making something new.”

Emmaus Bolton’s Scrap Store operates from 9 AM to 5 PM on weekdays and from 10 AM to 4 PM on Saturdays, providing ample opportunities for community members to visit and engage in sustainable crafting.
