Aurora, Indiana: The Hillforest Historic House Museum invites residents and tourists to experience Victorian tea-drinking traditions through themed events, including a Mother’s Day tea and a scone-making class, enriching their appreciation for the era’s cultural legacy and architectural beauty.

The Hillforest Historic House Museum, an iconic Victorian-era mansion located in Aurora, Indiana, is offering residents and tourists alike an opportunity to step back in time and indulge in the era’s elegant tea-drinking traditions. Built in 1855 by industrialist Thomas Gaff, the house stands as a testament to the architectural and cultural influences of the Victorian period, which spanned from roughly 1820 to 1914. The museum’s significance is underscored by its listing on the National Register of Historic Places and its designation as a National Historic Landmark in 1992.

As interest in the Victorian era continues to swell, bolstered by the popularity of television series like “Bridgerton,” “Downton Abbey,” and “Outlander,” the Hillforest Historic House Museum has organised a series of tea-time events that transport participants into this enchanting period. The museum not only provides tours of its stately interiors, but also hosts themed gatherings that evoke the charm and sophistication of Victorian tea customs.

One of the highlights of the museum’s calendar is a special Mother’s Day Tea Time event scheduled for May. In a lavish setting, attendees can treat mothers to a delightful three-course tea served in the elegant parlor of Hillforest. This special occasion also includes a guided tour of the historic mansion and a gift for mothers, with ticket prices set at $35 for museum members, $40 for non-members, and $20 for children aged five to twelve. Notably, there are no menu substitutions available for this event.

In addition to the Mother’s Day celebration, the museum will also host a Garden Tea Event in June, expanding the opportunities for guests to relish in the finer aspects of Victorian dining traditions.

For those interested in hands-on experiences, Hillforest is offering a March class titled “Scones, Make, Bake, and Partake.” Participants will learn the art of scone making from the museum’s expert bakers. Following a guided baking session, they will enjoy a tasting and tea while taking home their freshly made scones.

As the Hillforest Historic House Museum continues to engage visitors with its range of events, people are invited to explore its offerings and enjoy an immersive experience that highlights the history and culture of the Victorian era. The museum presents not only a taste of the past but also a chance for the community to engage with its storied history through these festive occasions.
