The L-2B flight jacket’s rich history and contemporary relevance highlight the growing interest in vintage items, as initiatives like VCM foster a deeper connection between enthusiasts and the past.
In the evolving landscape of vintage fashion, the Japanese select vintage shop “Grimoire,” opened in 2008, and its subsequent ventures have carved a niche for enthusiasts and collectors. Notably, in 2021, the comprehensive vintage platform, VCM (@vcm_vintagecollectionmall), was launched, establishing itself as the host of Japan’s largest vintage festival, the “VCM VINTAGE MARKET.” The organization has expanded its presence with a market-style shop called “VCM MARKET BOOTH,” a reservation-only store specializing in Hermès jewelry dubbed “VCM COLLECTION STORE,” and an event space, “VCM GALLERY,” all located in Shibuya Parco. These initiatives are part of a broader effort to connect vintage shops with fans nationwide while disseminating information about vintage items. An upcoming milestone in this journey is the publication of the inaugural book “Vintage Collectables by VCM” in October 2023.
Part of this ongoing dialogue around vintage items includes highlighting still-affordable pieces that remain largely undiscovered in the marketplace. Naoki Ju, the curator behind this initiative, features serialized installments titled “Must-Buy Vintage of the Reiwa Era” every Friday. The latest installment, the 40th in the series, spotlights the L-2B flight jacket, a notable item for vintage fashion enthusiasts.
The L-2B flight jacket has historical significance tied to its origins with the U.S. military. This type of attire was originally designed for pilots, and its classification varies depending on specific operational uses and environmental conditions. During the 1930s and 1940s, the Army Air Forces, the predecessor to the Air Force, categorized these jackets into three zones: heavy, intermediate, and light, aimed at providing appropriate clothing for pilots based on their temperature and mission requirements. The L-2B, classified as a light zone jacket, is ideal for spring and autumn wear.
Originally developed just before the Korean War in 1949, the L-2 jacket was groundbreaking for introducing nylon to flight jackets, a departure from the traditional leather materials which were in short supply. Following its inception, variations such as the L-2A emerged in 1952. However, the sage green design of the L-2B was specifically created to reduce visibility to enemies on the battlefield, as the previously used Air Force blue proved too conspicuous. Notably, a prototype of the L-2B, marked with “EXPERIMENTAL TEST SAMPLE” on its tag, has emerged as a rarity, particularly one in a larger size 46, and it features a patch associated with its original pilot. Despite protocol dictating the return of uniform items, many service members kept their jackets as personal mementos of pride and fashion.
Significantly, the L-2B’s design includes a unique feature: a rescue orange lining introduced in the early 1960s to allow pilots to turn their jackets inside out in the event of emergencies, thereby aiding in their visibility during search and rescue operations. A contrasting version of the jacket, which had been worn by a regular soldier, had all its patches removed, showcasing unique stitching marks that highlight the individual charm of vintage military attire.
Anticipating demand, the resale market for L-2B jackets maintains high value, with test samples starting at approximately 500,000 yen and standard models priced around 100,000 yen. Contemporary manufacturers and brands are also producing high-quality reproductions for those who appreciate the style without the premium price tag. The L-2B’s unpadded design has gained traction among women, encouraging them to incorporate vintage military wear as key accent pieces in their wardrobes rather than solely building outfits around vintage items.
The initiative emphasizes the enduring appeal of vintage clothing and its capacity to bridge historical significance with contemporary fashion trends.
