The 97th Annual Academy Awards dazzled with a remarkable showcase of fashion, featuring standout designs inspired by musical themes and classic elegance.

The 97th Annual Academy Awards showcased not only cinematic excellence but also a stunning array of fashion, drawing significant attention from viewers and critics alike. Doctor Fashion, a fashion historian and associate professor at Lynn University, provided insightful commentary on the glamorous outfits seen during the event in a segment aired on WPBF 25 News.

Held in 2023, the Oscars featured a vibrant display of styles that reflected the evening’s star-studded atmosphere. Doctor Fashion remarked on the standout themes of the night, notably the influence of the musical adaptation “Wicked,” which was evident through the designs inspired by its characters. Among the highlights was a striking Schiaparelli Couture dress named “Icarus in Flight,” worn by one of the performers, which featured a soft pink bodice and a tulle skirt adorned with an impressive 190,000 crystals and beads. He noted, “And if you look at the back, it has a red Dorothy beaded slipper,” emphasizing the detail and craftsmanship evident in the ensemble.

Another noteworthy appearance came from Cynthia Erivo, who donned a dramatic dark green dress described as evoking the “Emerald City” aesthetic. Her outfit featured a long skirt paired with a high-collared top from Louis Vuitton, further complemented by Roberto Coin accessories, embodying the theme of the evening through her look.

Actress Demi Moore also made waves with her appearance in an Armani Privé gown that highlighted her timeless beauty, enhancing the appeal with intricate crystal embellishments. Doctor Fashion commented on her appearance, marveling at her youthful glow, “Can you believe she’s over 60? She looks 40,” showcasing the remarkable fashion choices for more seasoned celebrities.

The event wasn’t limited to female stars; the male attendees equally impressed with their fashion statements. Doctor Fashion noted, “I always love it when the guys kind of step out of that traditional black or navy suit,” pointing to Jeff Goldblum’s lavender and white ensemble as an example of a fresh take on men’s formal wear. Domingo’s look, featuring a Valentino red jacket paired with black pants, also drew commendation for breaking the conventional mold.

However, amidst the glitz, there were a few misses on the red carpet. Doctor Fashion highlighted several underwhelming outfits, indicating that some choices appeared too casual for the prestigious occasion. He expressed disappointment with certain looks, like one described as resembling “going to visit grandma,” stating, “not for the red carpet,” signaling that these outfits did not meet the event’s high fashion standards.

As the awards show concluded, the anticipation for next year’s ceremony was palpable. Doctor Fashion speculated about what future events might bring, hinting at a continued trend of shimmering crystals and bold fashion statements.

Overall, the Academy Awards reflected a dynamic blend of creativity, traditional elegance, and modern experimentation, leaving fashion enthusiasts eager to see how the trends evolve in the coming years.
