New York: The FILIPINXT showcase at NYFW highlighted Filipino talent in fashion, featuring collections from designers like Bessie Besana and Gabby Garcia. The event merged traditional elements with modern aesthetics, celebrating cultural pride and creativity on an international stage.

At New York Fashion Week, the FILIPINXT showcase made a significant impact, highlighting the vast and creative talents within the Filipino fashion community. This event, which took place in the bustling heart of New York City, represented a pivotal moment for Filipino culture on a global fashion stage. It was part of the official NYFW.com lineup and featured a variety of designers, including Bessie Besana, Edited Limited + Adante Leyesa, Bagoyan, and Tagpi, who merged traditional Filipino elements with contemporary aesthetics in their collections.

The celebration was made possible thanks to the contributions of The Philippine Consulate in New York and Kalye NYC, with additional support from partners such as Hwangs Inc, New York Makeup Academy, and Angkla Resort and Travel Warehouse Inc. This collaborative effort enabled a splendid display of Filipino creativity and craftsmanship.

Bessie Besana unveiled her collection entitled “Rays of Twilight.” Known for her finesse in formal and bridal wear, Besana captivated onlookers with designs that emulated romance and sophistication. The collection utilised delicate materials such as Chantilly lace, silk, and tulle in a palette of serene whites and nudes. “The woman I envision wearing these pieces celebrates love in all its forms,” Besana stated. “I want her to feel her best, whether she’s in an intimate garden or on a quiet beach, embracing the love she has.” The pieces merged timeless elegance with modernity, featuring innovative cuts that augmented the wearer’s natural beauty.

Another emerging talent, Gabby Garcia of Tagpi, presented “Tahak,” a collection that intertwined the lush, tropical essence of the Philippines with the vibrant energy of New York City. Recognised as one of the youngest designers at NYFW, Garcia’s collection showcased high-quality, handwoven fabrics along with intricate designs that underscored his commitment to Filipino culture and sustainability. Garcia explained, “Tahak represents a journey—where the lushness of the Philippines meets the sophistication of city life.” His collection was noted for its striking visuals and versatility, adorned with a colour palette reflecting the natural beauty of the islands.

Jasmine Baac presented “Bagoyan Rising,” paying homage to the strength and resilience of Kalinga heritage. Originating from the Kalinga province, Baac’s designs were a blend of tradition and modernity, showcasing intricate handwoven Kalinga textiles. “Through Bagoyan Rising, I want the world to see how our heritage can transcend boundaries,” Baac remarked. Her collection featured earthy tones of red, terracotta, black, and blue, encapsulating the artistry of Filipino artisans while making a powerful statement for empowerment and cultural pride.

The collaboration between Leo Bartolome of Edited Limited and Adante Leyesa was also a highlight at FILIPINXT, featuring the collection “Tough Love.” This collection reflected a compelling exploration of contrasts, combining Bartolome’s bold streetwear elements with Leyesa’s intricate feminine accessories. Bartolome shared insights into his design journey, stating, “I’ve learned to embrace my weaknesses as a designer. Working with limitations pushed me to innovate and create pieces that are not only high-quality but also meaningful.” Leyesa elaborated on the emotional aspect of fashion, saying, “For me, fashion is more than just clothing; it’s art. I want my pieces to be recognized not just as fashion but as an emotional experience.” The collection blended versatility with striking designs, appealing to a broad audience of fashion enthusiasts.

FILIPINXT was co-founded by lawyer-entrepreneur Rob Mallari-D’Auria and acclaimed designer Bessie Besana, with the goal of elevating Filipino creativity and culture on an international scale. Beyond serving as a fashion platform, FILIPINXT emerges as a movement that embodies pride and innovation within Filipino artistry, aiming to carve out a space for these designers on the prestigious landscape of New York City.

As FILIPINXT continues to grow and feature the diverse craftsmanship of Filipino designers, it has rapidly established its position as a prominent force on the global fashion scene. The event offered a unique perspective on the fusion of Filipino heritage and modern design, signalling the ongoing evolution of fashion in a multicultural world.
