Free Air Life Co. has reopened its doors in Duluth, showcasing a curated selection of products inspired by the adventurous spirit of its co-owners and their commitment to sustainability.
A new chapter in local retail has begun with the reopening of Free Air Life Co., a store inspired by the adventurous spirit of its co-owners, Sarah Steinbach and Sarah Pohl. The boutique, located on the first floor of Zenith Basecamp at the corner of 27th Avenue West and Superior Street in Duluth, Minnesota, officially reopened its doors in January after undergoing renovations that spanned several years.
The duo has utilized their travel experiences to curate a selection of products that resonate with outdoor enthusiasts. “When we travel, we stop at as many local businesses and boutiques as we can. They give us inspiration,” Pohl said in an interview with WDIO News. The store encapsulates the essence of adventure, drawing on recommendations from fellow travelers and experiences gained during their own hikes and camping trips.
The idea for Free Air Life Co. originated back in 2019 when Steinbach expressed her desire to open a retail outlet that would showcase brands they cherished. Through her research, she discovered the Norwegian term “Friluftsliv,” which translates to “free air life.” “Just like you have hygge and obviously that cozy feeling and stuff, this is getting outdoors and connecting with the outdoor lifestyle,” Steinbach explained.
The store’s mission is to reduce barriers that might prevent individuals from enjoying outdoor activities. Free Air Life Co. offers a variety of men’s and women’s apparel, alongside accessories and gift items like journals, books, and candles. The co-owners are particularly focused on sustainability, prioritizing brands that utilize recycled materials or contribute to environmental efforts, such as tree planting or litter clean-up initiatives. “It’s brands that are walking the walk, they’re talking the talk, they’re doing the mission,” Pohl highlighted.
In addition to Free Air Life Co., Steinbach and her husband are also involved in the Zenith Basecamp hostel located above the store, which has recently opened in Duluth’s Craft District. They are looking forward to the imminent launch of Altitude Cocktails, a bar set to open at the back of the basecamp, further contributing to the thriving local business scene.
