Maseru, Lesotho – Maserati Makoa, a former Senior Accountant at the Ministry of Agriculture, has transitioned from her secured career to establish herself as a notable figure in the fashion industry. Driven by passion, creativity, and a vision to empower others, she launched Smart Brands, a boutique that aims to provide stylish and affordable clothing for both children and adults.

Maserati, a native of Mokhotlong and a mother of three, pursued her education in public accounting before embarking on a career at the Ministry of Agriculture. However, inspired by her childhood love for fashion, she left her well-paying job in 2016 to focus on her entrepreneurial aspirations. The boutique, initially set up in Leribe, has since relocated to Maseru at the BCP Mini Market house, and has expanded to three branches across different districts including Sea Point Magnet complex and Mohale’s Hoek millennium building.

Speaking to Informative News, Maserati reflected on her enduring passion for fashion. “From my childhood, I’ve always liked fashion, sometimes I would wear matching outfits,” she shared with a laugh. Founding Smart Brands was not only about selling clothes; it was also about motivating women to dress for their bodies and gain confidence. She emphasized, “A person’s confidence is boosted when she/he knows and feels that they dressed well and smart.”

Smart Brands offers a diverse range of products, from fashionable attire to Tupperware, catering to various demographics. Maserati adopts a consultancy approach, providing advice to her clients on how to style their outfits for a polished look. “I don’t just sell clothes to my clients, I help them on how to wear them so they look smart,” she explained, stressing the importance of looking good as it contributes to positivity and confidence.

Despite the achievements, Maserati has encountered several challenges in the retail fashion business. She noted difficulties stemming from low sales volumes and disappointments associated with layaway purchases, where customers fail to return for their items. “This layby issue is a very serious problem which hinders my sales,” she disclosed. The economic downturn affecting many industries has also impacted her clientele, particularly factory workers who depend on affordable options.

Maserati views her journey as a test of perseverance and faith, attributing her resilience to both personal conviction and spiritual belief. “I try as much as possible to stand still in my journey because of my passion. The other thing that motivates me is knowing that God is always on my side,” she stated.

Her commitment to her vision has borne fruit, as reflected in the successful expansion of her business. The opening of additional branches confirms that her entrepreneurial dreams are being realized, and she expresses gratitude for the milestones she has reached so far. “I am so grateful for being able to open these branches; it shows that all my dreams are coming true,” she remarked.

Maserati has not only focused on business growth but also on her family’s welfare, using her earnings to provide for her children’s education and invest in properties. “I managed to build the house rentals, and most importantly, I am able to take my kids to the higher-level schools of their choice,” she noted, showcasing the tangible benefits of her hard work.

Looking to the future, Maserati aspires to expand her boutique’s reach internationally. “I want to go abroad and open more branches in every district as I’ve noticed that people like being smart,” she said, indicating a desire to address the demand for fashionable attire.
