Model and musician Gabbriette showcases her unique ’90s grunge makeup style, emphasizing individuality and sustainability while collaborating with MAC Cosmetics on her latest lip kit.
Model, musician, and culinary enthusiast Gabbriette is making waves in the beauty world with her distinctive take on ’90s grunge makeup. Known for her signature style featuring thin eyebrows, bold black eyeliner, and a muted nude lip, Gabbriette credits her aesthetic to early influences from movies and teen magazines. “I started copying makeup from movies and teen magazines, following trends and figuring out what I liked from there,” she shared during her recent interview with ELLE. “I don’t mind using makeup to make myself feel better. It’s fun and it’s an art form.”
In a collaborative effort last July, Gabbriette joined forces with MAC Cosmetics to launch a three-step lip kit incorporating her go-to products. As part of the brand’s latest campaign, she continues to emphasize her passion for makeup, particularly lip liners, ahead of the campaign release.
Delving into her everyday beauty routine, Gabbriette cites a few essentials: “It’s always black eyeliner, filling in my brows, and lip liner,” she stated. She prefers to accentuate her features without heavy coverage, expressing a particular disdain for highlighters and overly drying products. “For me, the most important things are moisture and my lip combo,” she added.
Reflecting on what makes her feel most like herself, Gabbriette noted that her lip liner plays a vital role. She humorously recounted moments of touch-ups that lead to mix-ups in shade, recalling times when she inadvertently applied black eyeliner to her lips, quipping, “it’s fine. It’s a look.”
When asked about odd locations for makeup application, Gabbriette identified typical bathrooms as the norm but mentioned applying makeup in cars as somewhat unusual. She joked, “I’ve never been anywhere that’s super weird. Like, I’ve never been in a submarine doing my makeup—now that would be weird.”
Gabbriette is also candid about her eyebrow philosophy, emphasizing individuality. “My philosophy is to do whatever looks best on your face,” she explained. Preferring thin brows, she has opted to tweeze them off, stating, “I look so bad with thick brows.”
Her approach to lips has evolved since her high school days of wearing a red lip. Gabbriette now favors a more understated routine, combining lip liner from her MAC collaboration and colored gloss. “I’m not hating on a red lip, but it just doesn’t look good on me,” she admitted.
In terms of personal essentials, Gabbriette always carries a lip liner, as well as an array of other items including snacks, headphones, and hand sanitizer. She also lists an eyebrow pencil as a makeup must-have, sharing her pet peeve regarding perfume application: “I hate when people put on perfume when they already smell bad.”
Scent preferences lean towards smoky and cozy notes, with Gabbriette fond of fragrances that evoke comforting environments such as a fireplace or an old church. She mentioned a specific scent from Cire Trudon, called Mortel, which she describes as woody and reminiscent of a chapel.
Gabbriette draws inspiration from her ’90s style icons, including Disney’s Mulan, actress Cate Blanchett, and Susie Cave, who has been dubbed “the vampire’s wife.” She expressed admiration for unique personal style, particularly how Blanchett often wears her own outfits on the red carpet.
Sustainability has become a significant focus for Gabbriette, who has learned from her sister about the benefits of vintage and sustainable fashion. “I’ve fallen in love with vintage shopping,” she remarked, noting her preference for well-made basics above fast fashion.
Through her creativity and influence, Gabbriette continues to shape contemporary beauty trends while embracing her personal style journey.
