Actress Hayley Atwell shares her thoughts on storytelling in fashion while preparing for her upcoming promotion of ‘Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning,’ as she admires fashion icon Cynthia Erivo.
Hayley Atwell, the 42-year-old actress known for her roles in the “Mission: Impossible” franchise, is gearing up for an upcoming press tour to promote “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning,” set to begin in April. This follows her run in the West End production of “Much Ado About Nothing,” which is expected to conclude shortly before the tour starts.
In a recent interview with Grazia magazine, Atwell expressed her evolving perspective on fashion, stating that her approach has shifted towards an appreciation for the narrative and artistic elements behind each look. “My journey in fashion has become more about my interest in the storytelling behind the look,” she shared. Her admiration extends to various fashion icons, particularly singling out Cynthia Erivo for her distinctive style. “I’m obsessed with Cynthia Erivo, her whole defined look, or Saoirse Ronan, demure, powerful. Tilda Swinton, amazing…” Atwell emphasized her emphasis on the “art” of fashion, moving away from solely aiming to appear attractive. “That, to me, is the art side of fashion rather than, ‘Do I look hot?'” she explained.
Cynthia Erivo, who has recently garnered attention for her eye-catching nail designs and iconic fashion statements, made headlines after her appearance at the Oscars. At the prestigious event held at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, Erivo wore a custom dark green velvet ballgown by Louis Vuitton, featuring exaggerated hips, shoulders, and a pointed collar—a deliberate homage to her character, Elphaba, from “Wicked.” Speaking on ‘Live From E! The Oscars 2025 red carpet,’ Erivo noted, “It takes a while and every time we do a carpet we do them over. This time we did a proper ode to Oz. The Emerald City, all the green and the gold and the guild.” She expressed her excitement about the gown, stating, “I always wanted a big dress for the Oscars if I made it here. And here we are in this wonderful, giant big green dress. And I feel amazing in it.”
As both actresses navigate their respective endeavors in fashion and performance, their discussions reveal an industry increasingly focused on the deeper storytelling woven into the world of style.
