Acclaimed designer Helen McAlinden draws inspiration from Julia Roberts’ iconic look in ‘Pretty Woman’ for her new collection, featuring key pieces aimed at blending modern trends with timeless elegance.

Helen McAlinden, the acclaimed fashion designer, has recently unveiled her spring collection, captivating audiences with pieces that draw inspiration from popular culture, notably Julia Roberts’ iconic look in the beloved film ‘Pretty Woman.’ During a recent buying trip in Milan, McAlinden encountered a fabric adorned in brown, black, and white polka dots, which incited her recollection of Roberts’ memorable scene at a polo match. Speaking to EVOKE, McAlinden shared, “I think when I saw that fabric it reminded me of her and that movie.”

The highlight of her collection is the Avril dress, a sleeveless design that McAlinden believes closely resembles the dress worn by Roberts in the film. This dress features distinct design elements such as a wide, almost obi-style waist and voluminous pleats in the skirt. The collection also includes a midi dress named Beverly, a shirt called Ella, and trousers dubbed Imogen.

Brown, being a focal color for the upcoming season, marks a notable shift from the usual pastels and florals that dominate spring fashion. McAlinden elaborated on this trend, pondering, “I am not exactly sure why we’re all suddenly gravitating towards it,” while suggesting that Mocha Mousse has been named Pantone’s Color of the Year for 2025, potentially influencing this preference. According to her, brown, particularly in its toffee shades, offers a softer alternative to black, and pairs well with colors like pink, presenting a more sophisticated aesthetic.

The collection includes key items such as the Lydiah Camel Trench, priced at €555, the brown Cassie linen jacket, and Vanessa trousers, which are perfect for transitioning into summer. Additionally, McAlinden embraces a ’90s fashion revival with pieces like the white Frankie jumpsuit and a semi-sheer blouse available in ivory and cream shades.

Another significant offering is the Aurora puff sleeve dress presented in a vibrant pink, aligning with the voluminous styles currently trending. The collection also explores lively hues inspired by the sea, combining shades of green and blue, alongside classic stripes and tailored pieces featuring a Bouclé jacket and her new brand, All In The Shirt.

Among the more contemporary additions is a fresh olive hue, which McAlinden identifies as a sophisticated choice. The Dylan Soft Olive Dress, priced at €365, features a ruffled asymmetric hem, exemplifying the concept of ‘quiet luxury.’ McAlinden mentions, “It would be my favorite if I was going to a wedding or the races I would wear that dress,” highlighting its versatility.

In her approach to fashion, McAlinden emphasizes practicality and occasion versatility within her designs. “Sometimes I get annoyed because every time you come in to buy clothes, you know they’re buying something because they’re going somewhere, and I think: what do they wear every day?” she remarked. Her designs, including the easy-to-wear shirt priced at €85 and various jumpsuits and jeans, aim to provide wardrobe staples that elevate everyday fashion, blending quality with style.
