In honor of Global Recycling Day, Hobie Eyewear introduces Hull Float sunglasses made from upcycled materials, promoting eco-friendly fishing practices.

In Oceanside, California, Hobie® Eyewear has unveiled a new initiative to promote sustainability in fishing, coinciding with the celebration of Global Recycling Day. The company released a promotional video featuring professional anglers Carl Jocumsen and Kristine Fischer, who discuss the importance of responsible fishing and the innovative features of their latest product, the Hull Float sunglasses.

The Hull Float sunglasses are crafted from 100% upcycled plastic obtained from Hobie® Kayak scrap, specifically repurposed hatch cutouts. This eco-friendly approach not only minimizes waste but also ensures that the sunglasses maintain the durability and performance expected from Hobie® Eyewear. “I can’t say enough about how much the Hobie® Eyewear Hull Float sunglasses mean to me. They’re everything I’ve ever wanted in eyewear, and collaborating with such an iconic brand like Hobie® has been an incredible experience,” said Carl Jocumsen, a pro angler on the Bassmaster Elite Series. Jocumsen emphasized the sunglasses’ high-quality features at a competitive price point and noted that they are designed to float, which adds a level of convenience for fishing enthusiasts.

The sunglasses are equipped with bio-based polarized nylon lenses made from castor oil, which the company claims reduces carbon emissions by over 50% compared to conventional lenses. These lenses provide superior clarity, glare reduction, and 100% UV protection, making them suitable for various water conditions. Furthermore, the sunglasses feature an ultralight floating frame that allows for easy retrieval if lost and are designed with HydroClean™ coating that repels water, oil, and dust, ensuring clear vision during outdoor activities.

Kristine Fischer, a notable kayak angler and conservation advocate, underscored the necessity of sustainable practices in the fishing industry, stating, “In a sport where our natural resources are everything, it’s crucial that we act as responsible stewards of the water and practice conservation so future generations can experience fishing the way we do. That’s why Hobie® Eyewear’s initiative to upcycle old Hobie® kayak plastic into high-performance eyewear is so important.” Fischer highlighted that transforming waste into practical products for daily use on the water is a significant advancement for environmental sustainability.

In addition to its focus on eco-friendly design, Hobie® Eyewear has committed to giving back to the fishing community. A portion of all sales from the Hull Float sunglasses will benefit the FishAmerica Foundation, which engages in projects aimed at enhancing fish populations, restoring aquatic habitats, and improving water quality. Each pair of sunglasses also comes with a hard-shell case made from upcycled kayak plastic and a recycled microfiber pouch, further minimizing environmental impact.

The Hull Float sunglasses are currently available for purchase on hobieeyewear.com and through select retailers.
