Hormesis Attire, a Bali-based clothing brand established by Oliver Lang, is pioneering the revival of traditional batik textile art while emphasizing sustainability and modern design.
In an era where the traditional craft of batik textile art is waning, Hormesis Attire, a modern clothing brand rooted in Bali, is making strides to revive and innovate this cultural heritage. The brand, established by Oliver Lang, a retired professional paintball athlete, symbolizes a fusion of the richness of Bali’s past with contemporary fashion principles.
Lang’s journey began in 2016 when he arrived in Bali, drawn by its serene landscapes and vibrant artistic culture. It was during this time that he became aware of the challenges facing traditional batik, as much of it had fallen prey to industrialization and mechanized production. Inspired by a desire to restore the authentic essence of batik, Lang endeavored to redefine the craft, which led him on a quest that took him to Java.
There, he met a master tjap maker, an expert in the traditional batik stamping process. This collaboration with skilled artisans was pivotal, as Lang sought to incorporate sustainable practices in his designs. Partnering with a dye facility that utilizes natural extracts from leaves and barks, he emphasized eco-friendliness in his products. Additionally, the use of beeswax for intricate patterns, alongside premium materials like linen, cotton, hemp, and bamboo, showcases a commitment to both quality and sustainability.
In 2023, Hormesis Attire opened its flagship store, situated just off the vibrant streets of Ubud. The store stands as a tribute to Balinese culture, adorned with intricately carved masks, vivid paintings, and a nostalgic wall showcasing historic photographs that celebrate the island’s unique artistic heritage.
The collection at Hormesis Attire features an array of distinctive items. The True Batik Shirts are produced in limited quantities, ensuring exclusivity, while the Epic T-shirts display designs inspired by traditional Balinese motifs. Additionally, Regular T-shirts crafted from a premium blend of natural cotton and eco-friendly bamboo fibers cater to those seeking comfort and sustainability.
Hormesis Attire transcends being a mere clothing brand; it represents a narrative of reclamation and respect for both heritage and nature. Through Oliver Lang’s vision, batik evolves into a story of revival and sustainability that encapsulates the enduring beauty of Bali’s artistic spirit. Currently, Hormesis operates two stores in Ubud — one located on Jalan 1 Jl. Bimamuka and another on Jalan Hanoman No. 1, both staffed by an all-Balinese team.
