A new fungi-based textile developed by Hydefy in collaboration with designer Stella McCartney offers a cruelty-free alternative to leather, emphasizing sustainability and durability.

The fashion industry is witnessing a significant innovation with the introduction of a new fungi-based textile, developed by Hydefy, in collaboration with renowned luxury designer Stella McCartney. This partnership aims to provide a sustainable and high-performance alternative to traditional leather, presenting a cruelty-free option that emphasizes both durability and design.

Hydefy’s innovative material is derived from fungi identified during NASA-supported research in Yellowstone National Park. The company utilizes a proprietary fermentation process, which combines the fungi with sugarcane waste, to create a versatile and vegan textile. This groundbreaking material is positioned as an environmentally responsible option suitable for various applications, including fashion, automotive, and interior design, with features that allow for customization and rapid prototyping.

Stella McCartney, a prominent advocate for animal-friendly and sustainable fashion practices, expressed her enthusiasm for the collaboration, stating, “I am constantly exploring plant and fungi-based, regenerative alternatives that do not harm animals and heal Mother Earth. Harmonious to this philosophy, the innovators behind Hydefy are developing materials with fresh thinking and a focus on sustainability.” McCartney’s commitment to ethical fashion is reflected in the creation of the Stella Ryder handbag, which was unveiled during the Spring/Summer 2025 runway show. Dubbed her most advanced vegan bag to date, it is available for pre-order on McCartney’s website.

Hydefy’s material, known as Fy™, is now ready for commercial use, broadening its applications beyond fashion to include furniture and automotive industries. The parent company, The Fynder Group, has been incorporating these fungi-based inputs into the food industry through its brand, Nature’s Fynd, which has successfully launched plant-based meat and dairy alternatives, including meatless breakfast patties and alternative yogurts.

Thomas Jonas, co-founder and CEO of The Fynder Group, emphasized the significance of this collaboration in illustrating how innovative materials can fulfill fashion’s demanding standards without resorting to resource-intensive or harmful practices. He remarked, “Hydefy isn’t just another alternative—it’s the future of high-performance textiles. We’re proving that innovative materials can meet the highest standards of durability, quality, and aesthetics.”
