Karomi, a Bengal-based textile brand, merges traditional techniques with modern design, emphasizing craftsmanship and sustainability while honoring artisans.

Karomi, a textile brand rooted in Bengal’s rich weaving traditions, is at the forefront of transforming age-old techniques into modern artistic expressions. Founded by textile designer Sarita and chartered accountant Sarika, the brand has developed from the vision of a single artisan into a robust network of weavers, collectively redefining the handloom landscape.

The brand emphasizes both craftsmanship and sustainability, producing slow-fashion garments that utilize organic fibers and natural dyes. By integrating traditional methods with contemporary design, Karomi exemplifies an approach that prioritizes ethical practices while maintaining high aesthetic standards. The brand also ventures beyond weaving into other textile crafts such as hand-block printing and kantha embroidery, creating a diverse array of richly textured fabrics.

In addition to their clothing line, Karomi engages in the artistic realm with exhibited works that showcase their unique take on textiles. Recently, they featured a piece titled “Folk of the Faraway Tree” in the “Unstructured Whole” exhibition held in Ahmedabad, which opened in early March. This textile artwork draws inspiration from Enid Blyton’s cherished story, merging whimsical elements with the enduring symbolism of the Tree of Life.

Karomi’s commitment extends beyond mere aesthetics; it aims to honor the artisans behind the creations while also respecting environmental considerations. Through their innovative blend of tradition and modernity, they are reshaping how textiles can be perceived and valued.
