Guests experienced a vibrant blend of tradition and innovation at the presentation by Tottenham-based designer Kazna Asker, highlighting her Yemeni heritage.

Guests at the BFC Newgen space experienced a unique and immersive presentation by Tottenham-based designer Kazna Asker yesterday. The event was a celebration of culture and innovation, seamlessly transporting attendees to a mock souk reminiscent of the vibrant markets found in Yafa.

Asker’s work is deeply influenced by personal history, specifically her father’s migration journey from South Yemen to Sheffield in South Yorkshire. The curated souk featured traditional Yemeni silver pieces from Sazar Jewellery, an array of literature from independent retailer Maqam Books, and hand-embroidered canvases produced by the Yemeni women’s education charity YENOF. Traditional music played in the background, creating an atmosphere filled with cultural richness and nostalgia.

The clothing showcased at the presentation reflected Asker’s signature style, which incorporates traditional Middle Eastern dress with a modern sportswear sensibility. Notable highlights included the Abaya, traditionally a flowing garment, which was reimagined through contemporary draping techniques. The menswear featured a fusion of cloaks and thobes paired with relaxed track jackets, successfully bridging traditional attire with current trends. These pieces were crafted using classic upholstery textiles, enriched with bold colors like cobalt blue and deep red, contributing to the collection’s visual appeal.

The entire setup was designed not just to spotlight Asker’s clothing but to create a comprehensive cultural experience that celebrated the essence of migration and heritage. The interplay of tradition and modernity came together beautifully in what Asker has described as a “love letter written with fabric, stitched together with heart.”
