The new initiative aims to uplift local artisans by expanding their online presence and fostering community engagement through a dedicated platform.
Lewisham Council has launched an initiative called House of Lewisham to promote the creativity and talents of local artisans and businesses. The online marketplace is designed to support these enterprises in expanding their online presence, a necessity as only about a third of independent high street businesses in Lewisham currently sell online. This figure stands in stark contrast to the 90 percent of national brands that operate online in the Lewisham Shopping Centre.
House of Lewisham aims to provide various resources to assist early-stage businesses, including training and support in areas such as technology and the skills necessary for online selling. The initiative will feature a range of workshops, webinars, personalized advisory sessions, and group interactions intended to foster a sense of community among creators.
The concept of House of Lewisham originated from an online store that celebrated the unique culture of the borough, inspired by the earlier success of the House of Catford, which began by selling slogan sweatshirts. The initiative has since expanded to encompass the broader borough, allowing consumers to purchase directly from local creators. This format not only offers shoppers access to unique and high-quality products, but also supports the growth of local businesses.
In the coming weeks, more traders are expected to join the platform, enriching the variety of products available to consumers and introducing exclusive collaborations with local businesses. The new marketplace has been designed for a seamless user experience, incorporating marketing integration tools and secure transaction gateways.
Councillor Ese Erheriene, who serves as the cabinet lead for business, jobs, and skills, commented, “As an inclusive and ambitious borough, Lewisham is committed to tackling inequalities and driving transformative change. To further develop our vision of an inclusive local economy, we are creating conditions where skills, resources, and income can grow, stay and circulate throughout Lewisham.” She noted that House of Lewisham is a crucial element of the Inclusive Economy Lewisham strategy and action plan, aimed at ensuring local businesses thrive and contribute to the community.
Rebecca Thomson, director at Local Marketing Made Easy, expressed her pride in partnering with Lewisham Council on this initiative. “The House of Lewisham is more than just an online store – it’s a lifeline for local businesses to expand their reach, grow sustainably, and build resilience,” she stated. Thomson emphasized the goal of creating a lasting impact for participating businesses through expertise in digital solutions and marketing.
Local businesses interested in joining House of Lewisham can find more information about becoming a creator through the marketplace’s website.
