A new trend in London sees models posing with fingers in waistbands, a gesture symbolizing comfort in uncertain times, showcased in Natasha Zinko’s latest collection.

A notable fashion trend has emerged in London, where models have been seen posing with their fingers tucked into their waistbands, a gesture that has appeared on the runways of various designers, including Nuba, Di Petsa, and Stefan Cooke. This phenomenon, often interpreted through various lenses, has been described by Natasha Zinko as a reflective and comforting gesture, akin to thumb-sucking in children. “It’s about feeling safe and comfortable in unstable times,” Zinko explained in a preview of her fall collection, adding that it evokes a sense of relaxation, similar to being at home in one’s favorite pajamas.

Zinko’s latest collection appears to embrace this sense of comfort while layering it within the context of fashion. The collection presents what Zinko terms a “lived-in comfort” aesthetic that is suitable even for high-profile events, a quality that may catch the attention of celebrities such as Doja Cat. The pieces range from oversized crinoline skirts to patchworked maxi skirts composed of various fabrics, including upcycled hoodies and satin bloomers. Notably, some of these skirts feature poppered gussets that allow transformation into miniskirts with a simple tear.

In her designs, Zinko integrated unique elements such as paneled corsets into flounced polo shirts, fleece dresses designed with inside-out patterns, and bow-shaped bustiers crafted from former sweatpants. A recurring motif in the collection involves combining two different styles, as seen with sensible office trousers paired with houndstooth pants. The jeans showcased in this collection were described by Zinko’s team as having undergone an extensive washing process, humorously suggesting that they could withstand a marathon. Contrastingly, the jersey hoodies were noted as being the most restrictive items in the collection, with features that tightly enclosed the wearer’s arms due to additional sleeves attached to the kangaroo pockets.

Despite the absence of several designers from this season’s catwalks, Zinko expressed how this allowed her to take time for introspection. “I had time to think about the past ten years,” she remarked, reflecting on her career and the evolution of her brand. Since collaborating with stylist Betsy Johnson, Zinko’s brand has embraced a revitalization, yet she remains true to her original design sensibilities. Her latest collection features sequined dresses, lace-trimmed nighties, floral satin bombers, and bubble-hemmed minis that echo the girlish aesthetics she first popularized in the 2010s. The incorporation of outdated branding on double-layered baby tees in soft shades highlights a playful nostalgia, aiming to ground her brand in its historical roots while also appealing to contemporary tastes.
