Luka Sabbat made a notable appearance at the Rick Owens show on Thursday, showcasing pieces from his emerging fashion brand, Marking Distance. The label, which Sabbat launched in partnership with designer James Pierce last year, has been gradually introducing capsules and individual pieces. The highly anticipated debut of the first full collection is scheduled to take place in two weeks.
Speaking about the creative process behind Marking Distance, Sabbat explained, “We work on fabrics first, details second, and then, yeah.” The brand’s essence is derived from their inspirations, which include punk and military aesthetics, as well as classic films. Sabbat specifically mentioned Charlotte Rampling’s “The Night Porter” and Al Pacino’s “Cruising” as significant influences on their designs.
Known for his presence at high-profile fashion events, Sabbat admires Owens for his unique approach to creativity and independence in the fashion industry. He noted, “It’s like he really lives in his own universe. It’s one of the only brands where you could see something from a mile away and go: ‘That’s Rick.’ To build this ethos in the world, and being an independent designer without ever going to a house, he’s super, super inspiring. He’s managed to keep his creative integrity and like not sell out.”
Despite Owens’ collaborations with established brands such as Champion and Rimowa, Sabbat sees a compelling balance in maintaining a distinct artistic vision while engaging with broader commercial avenues. “Who else has the balance of the raw edginess of who they are and their brand, and still able to collaborate with major corporations? I find that really, really inspiring,” he stated.
While Sabbat aspires to host his own runway show for Marking Distance in the future, he remains grounded about the brand’s current status, saying, “We’re babies, you know, we’re brand new.”
Meanwhile, Chappell Roan, a singer and newcomer to the fashion scene, made her debut at fashion week by attending the Rick Owens show after a visit to Rabanne earlier in the day. Reflecting on her experience, Roan mentioned, “I’ve been on tour for two years so I can do the fun pop star stuff now,” indicating her excitement for her newfound engagement with the fashion community.
