A prominent luxury leisurewear brand, favored by celebrities, is set to open a new store in Newcastle, marking a significant retail development in the city.
An empty retail location in Newcastle city centre is set to welcome a prominent luxury leisurewear brand favored by numerous film, sports, and music celebrities. Enormous fabric wraparounds have been installed on a building located on Grainger Street, which previously housed the North East fashion firm END Clothing. END Clothing had operated there for nearly a decade before relocating to a new flagship store near Monument.
The newly wrapped building will soon transform into a three-story shopping destination for Carhartt, a U.S. clothing brand admired by personalities such as David Beckham, Jason Momoa, Austin Butler, Demi Moore, Matthew McConaughey, and musicians including Rihanna, Drake, and Dr. Dre. This marks a significant development for Newcastle as it will become the fourth UK city to host a standalone Carhartt store, joining Manchester, Bristol, and London.
END Clothing, which previously occupied the Grainger Street property, invested significantly in refurbishing the space in 2015, turning it into what was regarded as Newcastle’s premier sneaker shop. The store often generated considerable buzz, with fashion enthusiasts queuing for hours, sometimes camping overnight, to purchase limited edition items.
Carhartt, whose full history dates back to the 1880s when Hamilton Carhartt founded the company with just four sewing machines and five employees, originally specialized in making work overalls. By the onset of World War II, the brand had expanded to 17 factories producing uniforms for the military. The brand’s European expansion began in the 1990s when Edwin Faeh established the Work in Progress (WIP) subsidiary to serve as the exclusive distributor. Carhartt WIP opened its first store in London in 1997 and has since expanded to include locations in Sweden, France, and Ireland, in addition to its four UK locations.
As the new Carhartt store prepares to open its doors, the expectations are high for similar long queues reminiscent of the popular END Clothing releases, signaling a strong interest in the trendy attire the brand is known for.
