After a five-year hiatus, Margaret Qualley dazzles on the Oscars red carpet in a breathtaking black gown, showcasing her vintage-inspired style and a collaborative effort with her fashion team.
Margaret Qualley, a notable figure in contemporary fashion and red-carpet events, made an impactful return to the Academy Awards on March 10, 2025, after a five-year hiatus. The actor, known for her vintage-inspired style, graced the red carpet in a striking black backless gown designed by Chanel, a piece that took 153 hours to create. This gown, made from luxurious black silk velvet, features statement shoulders, a plunging back, and a sweeping train, echoing an iconic look from Chanel’s Spring-Summer 2005 Ready-to-Wear collection.
The gown’s simplicity allowed Qualley’s accessories from Chanel’s High Jewellery collection to take center stage. These included the intricate “Motif Russe” necklace, the elegant “Étoile Filante” bracelet, “Impression Florale” earrings, and two rings named “Pluie de Comètes” and “Ruban,” all crafted from 18-karat white gold and adorned with sparkling diamonds.
In discussing her look, Qualley credited the contributions of her stylist, Patricia Villirillo, as well as her hair and makeup team, including Anna Cofone, Tyron Macchaussen, and nail artist Emi Kudo. “I had the support of my incredible stylist Patricia Villirillo and the team at Chanel [for tonight’s look],” Qualley shared with Harper’s Bazaar. She noted the gown as a custom design inspired by Chanel’s spring 2025 collection, emphasizing the collaborative effort behind her appearance.
Tyron Macchaussen, the makeup artist, expressed his creative vision for Qualley’s look, drawing inspiration from the gown itself. “I was inspired by Margaret’s stunning black, velvet gown and I wanted to create a makeup look that exuded both effortless glamour and felt timeless,” he stated, referencing French style icons Inès de La Fressange and Jane Birkin.
Qualley, 30, relies on a close-knit circle for fashion guidance, a practice she continued ahead of the Oscars. While preparing for the Golden Globes, she sought insights from singer Lana Del Rey. This time, she turned to her sister, Rainey Qualley, for support. “My sister Rainey, she pushes me in the way only family can,” she remarked, sharing reflections on their lifelong practice of dressing up together.
In addition to her dazzling red carpet appearance, Qualley showcased her talent onstage during the event, performing a choreographed number for a tribute to the James Bond film franchise. This performance required a quick wardrobe change into a vibrant red satin dress, fitting for twirling on the grand stage at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles.
Reflecting on her return to the Oscars, Qualley described the experience as surreal. “It feels so surreal,” she said. “I couldn’t be happier to be here and to be able to support my dear friend Demi Moore. It’s been an honour to stand alongside Demi just as it was an honour to lay on that tile floor with her. She’s an angel and I’ve enjoyed every minute with her.”
This year’s Academy Awards not only marked a significant occasion for Qualley but also celebrated her involvement with the film “The Substance,” directed by nominated filmmaker Coralie Fargeat. Her presence at the event was underscored by the dual purpose of honoring both her friend and her professional endeavors in the film industry.
