Prominent Malaysian designer Melinda Looi launches Melinda Looi Uniform Atelier, aiming to elevate uniform design by merging style with practicality.
Melinda Looi, a prominent figure in Malaysian fashion, is broadening her creative horizons by venturing into uniform design with the launch of her new label, Melinda Looi Uniform Atelier. This initiative reflects her belief that “Uniforms need not be uniform!” As the Founder and Creative Director of Mellooi Creation Sdn Bhd, Looi aims to elevate the typically functional nature of uniforms by merging style with practicality.
The shift towards designer uniforms is a notable trend in various industries, particularly within hotels and airlines, where brands have historically enlisted designers to enhance their image and stand apart in competitive markets. Looi’s latest project includes designing bespoke uniforms for the staff at the Hyatt Centric Kuala Lumpur, which illustrate her signature approach. These uniforms not only feature a stylish casual aesthetic but also incorporate elements inspired by the tin mining industry, a nod to Malaysia’s cultural heritage. “I took inspiration from the tin mining industry and their workers, which is why you’ll see discrete elements of wear and tear on the design to carry that narrative,” she explained.
Looi’s extensive experience spans over two decades, and her portfolio includes collaborations with renowned brands both locally and internationally, such as Alila Shanghai, Andaz Hotel Singapore, and Grand Hyatt Bali in Indonesia. Her experience also includes working with local companies like Genting Highlands and Telekom Malaysia. With the launch of Melinda Looi Uniform Atelier, she is positioning herself to expand her work in the corporate sector, focusing on delivering sophisticated uniforms to esteemed organizations.
To create uniforms that align with a company’s brand identity, Looi has developed a comprehensive four-step process. The first step involves client discovery, where discussions are held to understand employees’ roles. This foundational phase is crucial for determining the unique stylistic direction of the uniforms. Following this, the design direction stage engages clients in a collaborative effort to explore various styles and color schemes. Once a design is finalized, the process moves into product development, where samples and fittings are reviewed. The final stage consists of production and distribution, a timeline that spans several months.
In addition to uniform design, Melinda Looi Uniform Atelier is also expanding its services to include product design for corporate gifting. Looi has worked with notable clients, such as W Hotel and Grand Hyatt Kuala Lumpur, to create tailored gifting solutions that resonate with brand identities. “Using our trusted network of suppliers, we can source and design products to match any brief, no matter how adventurous or unusual. And with our exquisite craftsmanship, we have the expertise to make your gifting visions reality,” she stated.
Through her latest endeavor, Looi aims to redefine the perception of uniforms by merging functionality with contemporary style, a step that positions her atelier at the forefront of the evolving corporate and hospitality landscape in Malaysia and beyond.
